This novel has been invaluable to my high school-based English 102 course. Students have been incredibly engaged in this novel both in discussing its themes and its connections to feminist theory, queer theory/gender theory and the devices of Gothic literature. \r\n\r\nAt the start of the unit, students learned about the feminist lens and how feminist authors like Jackson implement concepts like the male gaze to show how a patriarchal society has historically mistreated women. Students were quick to notice these concepts with the main character, Eleanor, and her wish to escape her constant state of subservience. Then, we discussed the devices of Gothic literature, including the uncanny, the return of the repressed, the sublime, and the grotesque. Students conducted multiple discussions applying these concepts into Jackson's writing. Finally, students were able to examine the novel through the lens of queer theory/gender theory, specifically using Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity. All of my students were able to pull examples from the text and apply direct evidence to support their applications of this theory. \r\n\r\nOverall, this has been a highly worthwhile experience for my students, and I am highly grateful for this opportunity that you have given them!","fullyFundedDate":1741141991669,"projectUrl":"project/college-literature-course-textbook-the/9108493/","projectTitle":"College Literature Course Textbook - The Haunting of Hill House","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8359873_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739556678538","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8359873"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64600","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2066,"numTeachers":87,"percentFrplEligible":49,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":26,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":37,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"23.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":81.7,"schoolId":64600,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Governor Thomas Johnson High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Governor Thomas Johnson High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/frederick-county-public-school-district/gov-thomas-johnson-high-school/64600"}
