Representation matters deeply, and it has been incredibly meaningful for my Black students to see characters who look like them, sound like them, and share similar experiences. These new texts have opened the door to lessons around identity, empathy, and community. We've been focusing on skills like making text-to-self connections, analyzing character development, and understanding how stories reflect larger social and cultural themes. Many students have been inspired to write their own stories after reading these books, which is such a powerful shift toward student agency and voice.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is interactive and joyful. We read aloud together, have small group discussions, and use journals to reflect on what we've read. The energy is real when a student sees a hairstyle, family dynamic, or neighborhood in a book and says, \"That's just like me!\" One student who was previously hesitant to read independently now asks to take books home to read with his siblings. Another student lights up every time we revisit a book with a confident, Black girl as the lead, something she says she never saw before this year. Your support has helped us not only build stronger readers, but prouder and more empowered ones, too.
