When they first saw the candy, they were immediately excited and curious about what we were going to do with it. Each group received candy to sort by type and color, count, and organize into a two-way frequency table. Having something familiar and fun to work with made the math feel much more approachable and gave students a real reason to carefully collect and organize their data.\r\n\r\nAfter collecting data in small groups, we combined everyone's results to create a whole-class data set. Students used this larger set of data to calculate and compare frequency, relative frequency, and conditional relative frequency. They were answering questions about the different color distributions of Skittles and M&M's and using their calculations to support their conclusions.\r\n\r\nOur next step was to reflect on what the whole-class results told us. Students compared their smaller group samples to the larger class sample, look for patterns and differences, and consider why a larger sample can give us more reliable information. This project allowed students to practice important statistics skills with data they collected themselves, making an abstract math concept much more concrete and engaging. Once those forms set up, they used the beautiful new cutting and sculpting tools you provided to aggressively slice, tear, and alter the pieces, rebuilding them into towering, gravity-defying architectural sculptures.\r\n\r\nHaving access to three different types of clay was an absolute game-changer for our classroom. The students learned hands-on spatial engineering—using the highly grogged, gritty clay to build strong, load-bearing bases, while utilizing the smooth, pliable clay for delicate stretching and altering. My students cannot mail their physical clay, wire, or mixed-media sculptures to the College Board for grading; they have to submit a digital portfolio. This camera is teaching them the vital, real-world skill of professional art documentation. They are learning how to manipulate lighting, depth of field, and focus to accurately capture the volume, texture, and scale of a 3D object on a flat screen.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students has been seeing the immediate, professional quality of their images. When they use this camera to capture the intricate details of their work, like the crisp lines of a carved clay texture or the exact reflection of a glaze , their sculptures look like they belong in a professional gallery or magazine. It gives them a massive sense of pride and validates the hours of labor they put into their art.\r\n\r\nThis technology has been especially empowering for my English Language Learners and students who sometimes struggle to articulate their artistic process in writing. I've learned over time that the most expensive I can charge for any item is 7 tickets, so the stuff goes rather quickly. They don't have the patience to wait for things that are 10 tickets or more. I need my room to constantly have whatever snack strikes their fancy for the tickets to work. \r\n\r\nHere's a good story: Recently, I had an administrator observe my teaching. He said it was one of the best he's seen in his career, and while much of it is due to the extensive training that I have with teaching skills, the student store and ticketing give its that final 5% of fun and engagement that make the room a positive place to be. \r\n\r\nFor example, if I have a lot of students (32, say) and about 10 of them are not in their seats and not starting the class correctly, I start loudly walking around and handing out tickets to those who are doing what they are supposed to do. Suddenly, all the students are rushing for their binders and opening their Chromebooks. It's not foolproof, but it's usually quite effective. And it only works if I have snacks the students actually want to buy. Like Takis. Takis are the most important of all the snacks.
