I need my room to constantly have whatever snack strikes their fancy for the tickets to work. \r\n\r\nHere's a good story: Recently, I had an administrator observe my teaching. He said it was one of the best he's seen in his career, and while much of it is due to the extensive training that I have with teaching skills, the student store and ticketing give its that final 5% of fun and engagement that make the room a positive place to be. \r\n\r\nFor example, if I have a lot of students (32, say) and about 10 of them are not in their seats and not starting the class correctly, I start loudly walking around and handing out tickets to those who are doing what they are supposed to do. Suddenly, all the students are rushing for their binders and opening their Chromebooks. It's not foolproof, but it's usually quite effective. And it only works if I have snacks the students actually want to buy. Like Takis. Takis are the most important of all the snacks. Students immediately saw how these tools could support studying, collaboration, virtual learning, and personal responsibility—skills that are essential for college, trade programs, and career training. \r\nSeveral students who previously struggled with focus or consistency showed noticeable growth. For example, students who are preparing for college or vocational programs became more proactive about planning for life after graduation. They saw all the fun snacks and toys and In fact, I need to make a new project to fund it again and get more materials. The kids look forward to it every week and it gives me something to incentivize good behavior. The best part of it is creating a culture of known good behavior that can last in my classroom. I have almost all ninth graders and there are still a lot of variations maturity level in the room, so extrinsic motivation appeals to the most students.\r\n\r\nI use the tickets the most in the beginning of the class, when the students are supposed to have their binders and computers ready on their desk regardless of the lesson plan. When I walk around to give the tickets, it triggers the students who are lagging to rush and grab their materials. Post-covid has been very difficult on teachers. The two years of learning loss created such terrible social habits and this has been my way to retrain students how to student appropriately.\r\n\r\nWhat comes with good behavior is actual learning, which over time turns into actual motivation. When students know the answer, they want to participate more. When the classroom is quieter, they learn. It's not a perfect solution - not all students take to the tickets, but the majority do and I am seeing a longer honey-moon period as a result. (The honeymoon period can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks in school. Then the real students come out.) They use mini whiteboards to solve problems individually and in groups/partners and show their understanding as well as their struggles. The craft sticks have also been great for student engagement. The craft sticks allow for me to choose students randomly, to give other students an opportunity to share their learning instead of calling on the same students who raise their hands.
