Reading is essential in all subjects, including science, and it was important for me to incorporate engaging nonfiction texts that not only improve literacy skills but also deepen students' understanding of scientific concepts.\r\n\r\nAs a 7th-grade science teacher, I was able to connect this book directly to our science standards. American Murderer explores the spread of disease, the role of parasites, and the impact of sanitation and public health efforts—topics that align with our study of human body systems, ecosystems, and infectious diseases. By reading this book, students saw real-world applications of science, learning how historical scientific discoveries continue to shape our world today.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is an interactive and engaging experience. In addition to the digital projects my students completed, we also participated in a Socratic seminar, where students discussed their insights, debated ideas, and engaged in meaningful conversations. They were excited to connect what they read to both science and modern public health issues, making the learning experience relevant and thought-provoking.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most powerful impact of this project was seeing students truly enjoy reading nonfiction. For some, this was the first book they read from cover to cover—and they were proud of their accomplishment! This experience ignited a love for reading, and we have now incorporated bi-weekly visits to our school library to encourage independent reading. Additionally, many of my students have joined our district's Battle of the Books initiative, expanding their curiosity and literacy skills beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nThis project didn't just provide a book—it helped my students see reading as a tool for discovery, discussion, and deeper understanding of science. Thank you for believing in my students and making this meaningful experience possible!","fullyFundedDate":1721661021636,"projectUrl":"project/hooked-battling-the-bloodsucking-worms/8445960/","projectTitle":"Hooked!
