I did want to get the school year going and see the impact of these books since I got them so late in the year last year. These books were an invaluable addition to my classroom library. Many of my students this year are excited about reading due to the 40 Book Challenge I have issued to them based on Donalyn Miller's landmark book ,\"Reading in the Wild.\" \r\n\r\nWe have so many students this year looking for a place to fit in, and I have been recommending the books you sent me like crazy! Linked and Good Different have been used in my First Chapter Fridays each week, and they have been staying checked out ever since. My graphic novels section of the classroom library stays busy, and your gifts of Pizza Face, Four Eyes, and Invisible have been extremely popular so far this year.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity and kindness. I have read 4 first chapters so far this year, and every week many students will beg for the book, so I have to create a raffle with everyone's name in it who wants to read the book. I draw at the end of the day when all the students in 6th grade are lined up in the hall to walk to the buses and car rider line.\r\n\r\nThe drawing creates suspense and increases the desire for each book. It makes students feel like the books are special (because they ARE). I plan to continue this procedure in my classroom for the remainder of the year to ignite interest in my students who are typically reluctant readers at this age.\r\n\r\nA parent approached me after a sporting event yesterday to tell me she couldn't find her daughter that morning anywhere around the house, then she finally found her in a swing in the backyard reading a book, which was one of our First Chapter Friday books. She was thrilled and said she couldn't remember the last time her daughter had read a book on her own like that. \r\n\r\nYour generosity and effort have made an impact on the young people in my classroom and will continue to do so throughout the year. The students were so excited when our boxes were delivered. I let them help me open the boxes and arrange the materials. I also let them guess based on the items what we would be making. It did not take them long to figure out what we were doing. We worked over several weeks planting, watering, and being sure our plants got sunlight. Each day, different students had different responsibilities maintaining the little vases. We also decorated the vases with the stickers and cardboard vases.
