When the equipment arrived—soccer balls, bibs, cones, and technology tools—our students were thrilled. Their eyes lit up as we opened each box, and they immediately began brainstorming ways to use the materials to improve their skills and prepare for the cultural exchange. It was a powerful reminder of how sports can empower students to lead and collaborate.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our players now have the tools to engage more deeply with both the sport and one another. They were so excited by the opportunity to partake in this tradition of printed media, and I was astounded by the creative ways they visualized and connected their background knowledge of German language, history and culture to their artworks. Several students expressed that it had been a long time since they made any art at all, and while initially doubtful of their skills they were soon encouraging and complementing each other on their first drafts, and even sharing techniques they were developing themselves through trial and error. We did have to clean up quite a bit of ink from our tables throughout this process, but we all agreed the experience was worth the extra elbow grease! Students turned in one set of prints to hang in the hallway outside our classroom, and many students created extra copies to bring home or gift to friends.\r\n\r\nThanks to the resources provided by your donation, my students were able to connect their personal interests to the larger context of their German learning in a meaningful and memorable way. During our final gallery walk, students thoroughly (and in the target language) explained how each of their prints exemplified the influence of the gathering and dissemination of knowledge and the power of expressing one's opinion. As the world becomes increasingly connected through the nebulous internet, the physical media created by students reminds them of their impact in local communities. Students will be able to use the skills developed during this project to thoughtfully navigate the information they take in and feel empowered to express their own experiences and findings. With many of the materials being reusable and plenty of ink left over, this is a unit I will come back to again and again!","fullyFundedDate":1729787145417,"projectUrl":"project/influence-of-word-on-world-though-german/8864845/","projectTitle":"Influence of Word on World Though German Printmaking","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ruh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9714453_orig.png?crop=1286,1286,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727904659698","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9714453"},{"teacherId":9759008,"projectId":8799267,"letterContent":"I want to thank you for your generous donation that helped fund the Mandalas with Math project. I'd love to share how these new texts are making a difference in our classroom and how reading looks on a day-to-day basis.\r\n\r\nSome of the key skills and lessons that these texts introduce include:\r\n\r\nVocabulary Building: Through rich and varied language, students are exposed to a broader vocabulary, helping them not only to understand new words but also to apply them in context. This is an essential skill that improves both reading comprehension and writing fluency.\r\n\r\nCultural Awareness and Empathy: The magazines span a range of genres and cultures, allowing students to see the world from different perspectives. This promotes empathy and encourages students to consider viewpoints outside their own experience.\r\n\r\nBuilding Fluency: With frequent practice, students improve their reading fluency, which allows them to read more smoothly and confidently. This, in turn, improves their comprehension and enjoyment of reading.\r\n\r\nWhat Reading Looks Like in Our Classroom\r\nIn our classroom, reading is not just an activity—it's an experience. We incorporate a range of strategies to help students connect with texts in meaningful ways:\r\n\r\nParticular Students Enjoying the New Books\r\nWe've seen some truly exciting responses from students as they engage with these new books. Some students who may have struggled with reading in the past are now becoming more enthusiastic readers. For example:\r\n\r\nReluctant Readers: Students who previously struggled to get excited about reading are now diving into books they relate to. The diversity in the texts has provided them with fresh avenues to explore. \r\n\r\nStudents of Different Backgrounds: We've also noticed that students from diverse cultural backgrounds are particularly engaged with texts that reflect their own experiences or explore the experiences of people from similar backgrounds. \r\n\r\nIn short, these magazines provide opportunities for intellectual growth, cultural exploration, and personal expression. With your support, we are able to create an environment where all students, regardless of their starting point, can engage with texts in a meaningful way and build the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your generous contributions. Your investment in these books is truly making a difference in the lives of our students, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support.","fullyFundedDate":1726759493811,"projectUrl":"project/ahora-reading-in-spanish/8791232/","projectTitle":"!Ahora! Your contribution has truly enriched the learning experience for my students, opening up a world of language, culture, and exploration that extends far beyond our classroom walls.\r\n\r\nWith the arrival of these engaging magazines, our students are diving into authentic Spanish texts that enhance their reading comprehension while introducing them to real-world topics and vocabulary. Each article sparks meaningful discussions about cultural themes, global issues, and personal interests, making learning both engaging and relevant.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an active and vibrant experience.
