When the students first opened the boxes, there was an audible buzz of excitement. I watched as several students immediately began comparing the crayons to their own arms, calling out to their friends, \"Look, this one actually matches me!\" For many of our students, who have spent years trying to mix peach and brown to find a \"close enough\" shade, this was a powerful moment of validation. They no longer have to settle for an approximation of their identity; they finally have the tools to reflect their true selves with dignity and precision.\r\n\r\nWe recently put these resources to use during a cross-curricular biography and self-portrait project. In our dual immersion setting, we focus heavily on identity and the \"Third Space\" where our cultures and languages meet. As students wrote their narratives in both English and Spanish, they used the \"True Palette\" crayons to illustrate themselves and their family members. One student, who previously struggled with self-portraits, spent nearly twenty minutes carefully selecting three different shades to capture the specific undertones of his skin. The pride in his final work was visible; he wasn't just drawing a person, he was accurately documenting his heritage.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these crayons will be a permanent fixture in our \"Community Heroes\" unit. Our next step is for students to interview a local community member and create a visual tribute to their contribution to our neighborhood. Because we live in such a beautifully diverse area, having these inclusive colors ensures that our students can honor their subjects with the respect and realism they deserve. Your generosity hasn't just provided art supplies—it has provided my students with the message that their skin color is worth seeing, naming, and celebrating.","fullyFundedDate":1763474734833,"projectUrl":"project/a-true-palette-promoting-diversity-and/9876758/","projectTitle":"A True Palette: Promoting Diversity and Self-Worth","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Tejeda","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7441556_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694621837466","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7441556"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_75493","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":566,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":88,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":96,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"28.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":null,"schoolId":75493,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Freedom Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Freedom Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/farmersville-unified-school-district/freedom-elementary-school/75493"}
