Students use them during phonics and handwriting practice to form letters, tap out sounds, and build sight words in a tactile, engaging way. One of my favorite classroom moments so far has been watching a small reading group practice mapping CVC words in the trays—they were so focused, tracing each sound with their fingers and proudly reading the word they created. The trays have turned foundational skills into something hands-on and exciting, and I can already see a boost in both confidence and accuracy.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the sand trays, their faces lit up. Many of them gasped or clapped, and a few immediately asked, \"Can we try them right now?\" They were eager to explore the smooth sand and couldn't wait to take turns practicing their letters. What could have been a simple introduction to new materials quickly turned into a joyful moment that set a positive tone for our literacy block.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our learning doesn't stop here. We are currently working on strengthening phonemic awareness and early writing skills, and the next steps involve using the trays for more advanced phonics patterns, such as blends and digraphs. As students grow more confident, we'll also incorporate the trays into small-group intervention work and independent literacy stations. Your support has made these meaningful learning experiences possible, and we're so grateful for the difference you've made in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1746787016234,"projectUrl":"project/digging-into-literacy-a-sandbox-approac/9059018/","projectTitle":"Digging Into Literacy: A Sandbox Approach to Multisensory Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Buchanan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8142081_orig.jpg?crop=1149,1149,x0,y137&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1645197926387","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8142081"},{"teacherId":2484567,"projectId":9564199,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support! Their excitement and sense of ownership set the tone for all the learning that now happens there.\r\n\r\nThese resources have truly changed the way my students engage with their work. The cushions allow them to choose comfortable spots around the room, giving even my most hesitant learners the freedom to focus and participate. The carpet cleaner has also been essential. It keeps our new rug fresh, safe, and ready for daily use, which matters so much with active third graders. Students also love taking ownership and using it when they notice a mess on the carpet. \r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and investing in their learning environment. One memorable moment was when we began using the materials during our small group lessons—students who are usually shy raised their hands, engaged more confidently, and proudly shared their work.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the resources daily to support hands-on learning. For example, during our recent reading lesson, students worked together to identify the central idea and details in an informational text, using the new supplies to highlight and organize their thinking. Their faces lit up when they realized how much easier it was to keep track of their ideas with the new tools.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for us will be diving deeper into our current unit, where students will create their own informational projects to teach their classmates about a topic of their choice. Thanks to your generosity, they now have the tools to plan, organize, and present their learning in creative ways.\r\n\r\nYour gift has truly brought joy, confidence, and a spark of motivation to our classroom.
