Because of your support, we received a flute and other classroom supplies, and they have already made a positive impact on the students.\r\n\r\nThe flute has given students the opportunity to explore melody, breath control, and musical expression through performance. The best part is that now we can improve the sound of our flute section, and have the more experienced flute players help the new ones. \r\n\r\nThe friction mallets allow students to creatively play the gong while learning about timbre and dynamics. These new instruments have increased student engagement and made our music lessons more hands-on and exciting for sure. Whether it is a drum or a flute, students have to learn that their instruments are very valuable, and also (unfortunately) breakable. They are not able to be replaced so easily, and just like how they take care of their phones and their computers, we have to respect and care for our instruments. Thanks to you, we were able to protect and nest our singing bowls so they can be safely kept in our classroom, and also transported to other rooms if need be. The students understood how important it is for each bowl to have a snug fit, and how there are specific size cases for each bowl. They actually recently asked if they were able to do a unit on it before their final exams. Everyone loves the calming sounds and how nice the music sounds even if you are just making something up and not necessarily reading music. It's easy for them to work in small groups, and many students we usually did not work together before came together to play these new instruments. It was nice to see new friendships for me and everyone talking a little bit more. We are looking forward to teaming up with the yoga instructor to see if we can do a little mindfulness sound meditation with both groups also! We really appreciate you supporting our classroom and giving the kids something new to try. We first used them the day after a concert so it was a great way to make music in a stress free way and just vibe with each other after the previous night's performance. They were commenting how relaxing everything sounded and how easy each instrument was to play. They really enjoyed not being able to make a mistake and still keep the flow of the music going. We will be doing more with these instruments in the future, but they do love them for the stress relieving aspect of them. \r\n After our holiday performances, we will take the month of January to do some thoughtful writing and reflecting, and then start to put those creations to music from these peaceful instruments. I am hoping to create a positive environment for musical composition, which can be so very personal and scary. Many of them are passionate about their music streaming and truly enjoyed being able to share their interests with their classmates. Usually we just play instruments in band class, but this was a good music related activity that also included technology - laptops, music streaming sites, and the actual physical setting up and hooking the computers to the transmitters for the Silent Disco. It allowed students who work well with their hands to do the physical stuff, others who were more comfortable to work with the actual laptops, and then everyone was able to enjoy one activity together. \r\n The students who were the actual DJs felt so empowered to be able to share their musical likes with their peers. The students who volunteered for this position really put themselves out there and made themselves vulnerable to teenage musical style criticism, but they did such a good job and were very proud of themselves in the end. Cougar Kitchen has developed into a stand alone business for our special needs students. This project has increased their confidence not only in the kicthen but in their selling skills as well. They are able to show others their cooking skills and explain their process.
