After completing a short story in our workbooks, we began delving into the graphic novel \"New Kid.\" By the third chapter, every student in each class period was fully engaged. They participated in table discussions regarding the varying treatments of characters by teachers and peers alike. This naturally led to an insightful dialogue on the topic of stereotyping, during which they also learned the term \"microaggression.\" \r\n\r\nWe identified parallels between the themes in this novel, set in the 2000s, and the short story, which takes place in the late 1950s during the early stages of school integration. Overall, the students thoroughly enjoyed the graphic novel, with many expressing their intention to encourage their parents to obtain the sequel to discover what happens next. In previous school years, this unit posed a challenge as we worked with only excerpts of the novel in our workbook. However, with access to the complete text, I have observed a marked improvement in the students' understanding of key concepts and skills, as they are now able to draw deeper connections between the two time periods.","fullyFundedDate":1735682127408,"projectUrl":"project/echoes-of-inequality-comparing-discrimi/9011963/","projectTitle":"Echoes of Inequality: Comparing Discrimination During Segregation to Modern-Day Injustice","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ramirez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3255016_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1625779634394","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3255016"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_107648","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":36,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":72.2,"schoolId":107648,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Franklin Academy-Sunrise on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Franklin Academy-Sunrise","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/broward-county-public-schools/franklin-academy-sunrise-opening-fall-2015-/107648"}
