Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and have limited access to books of their own, so being able to hold a brand-new book and know it belongs in their classroom is powerful. Through this text, students are learning that poetry isn't something distant or intimidating—it's a way to express feelings, memories, and ideas in their own voices. We are practicing close reading, noticing word choice and line breaks, and learning how authors use language to show emotion rather than just tell it.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now filled with curiosity and conversation. Students read aloud, pause to talk about what Jack might be feeling, and eagerly share lines that stand out to them. The short, accessible poems invite reluctant readers in, while still challenging students to think deeply about meaning, structure, and voice. Writing has become more joyful, too—students are experimenting with their own poems, inspired by the mentor texts they see in Love That Dog.\r\n\r\nSome of my most hesitant readers have been the most enthusiastic. Students who once struggled to finish a page are now asking to reread poems and share their writing with classmates. One student told me, \"I didn't know poems could be about regular life.\" Thanks to you, my students are discovering that poetry belongs to them—and that their words matter. Your kindness has opened the door to confidence, creativity, and a love of reading that will last far beyond this project. 💙📚","fullyFundedDate":1768261910805,"projectUrl":"project/help-give-the-gift-of-poetry/10002390/","projectTitle":"Help Give the Gift of Poetry","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kruszlinski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10400612"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_22536","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":600,"numTeachers":50,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":75,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":22536,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Francis J O'Neill Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Francis J O'Neill Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/central-islip-union-free-school-district/francis-j-o-neill-elementary-school/22536"}
