The kids would often ask if they could \r\nuse the dry-erase circles. The students enjoyed using them instead of the traditional pen and composition notebook. Depending on the grade and skill level of my kids, I include in my lessons a warm-up that can range from picture or sound sorts, word sorts, or spelling. \r\nDuring the lesson, we practice spelling and reading new phonics skills or letters, and at the end of the lesson, there is a \"check for understanding.\" Many of these components can be done using the dry-erase circles. All my students enjoyed using the dry-erase circles and were more engaged and focused when using them. Some students went beyond writing \r\nthe letters or words I dictated by building additional words (both real and nonsense) within the focal word family. Others would practice the \"high frequency words\" they had learned.\r\nSpelling reflects higher-order thinking. It requires the student to break apart the word \r\ninto its individual sounds and connect each sound to the correct letter. The student \r\nthen has to write the correct letter. No small task for beginning or struggling readers. \r\nOlder students learn phonics rules that support reading accuracy as well as spelling. Many of my students made a lot of progress in spelling, phonics skills, and letter formation. In addition, the kids and I appreciated the cushions since I often teach in the hall, sitting on the floor. \r\nNext steps: Fifth and sixth-graders are going to read a novel using sticky notes to make annotations. We will continue to learn more advanced phonics to support reading accuracy and spelling.
