Sometimes it's hard to motivate them to learn just for the \"sake of knowing.\" Sometimes they need motivation. \r\n\r\nI keep a jar of Smarties on my desk that says \" You are what you eat!\" Students smile about the tradition of there always being Smarties for smarties. \r\n\r\nSome students cannot eat Smarties, so I like to have other choices for them. The students were delighted with the disco ball. We had discussed what we could do with the money if I were to win. They overwhelmingly asked for a disco ball for the classroom. With over 130 students in my classroom each day, it serves as a visual reminder of the generosity of the program. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the small portion of money I spent on the disco ball, I used a large portion of the money to purchase a class set of new calculators. Many students do not have calculators. As we progress through the Algebra 2 curriculum, it becomes harder to stay current with the content without a good calculator. The calculators I chose to purchase through the grant are multi-view. Students can see both the input and the output, thus improving their accuracy and understanding. These calculators have been indispensable for our financial applications unit.\r\n\r\nI was both humbled and honored to receive the grant.
