They immediately began brainstorming all the places they could work—on the carpet, by the window, in small circles on the floor, even standing near our whiteboard to sketch out ideas. Their excitement set the tone for what has become a much more flexible, creative learning environment.\r\n\r\nWe now begin our lessons by choosing the \"best space for our brains.\" Students spread out with their lap desks and clipboards, forming natural partnerships and teams as they work. One of my favorite moments happened during a reading discussion activity: instead of sitting at assigned tables, students formed little clusters around the room, leaning over their clipboards to annotate text and debate character choices.
