The Capstone students love a pick-me-up during their classtime, and they were so excited when I told them that I had gotten a Donor's Choose for them. They said I was the best, and that they were so happy I had thought of getting them snacks. I explained that I only asked for the donations-you, the donors, made it happen!\r\n\r\nI also shared the snacks with my Nutrition class students. In that class, I let them choose a snack, and then they had to evaluate the snack with regard to calories, fat, trans fat, protein, and fiber. This was a really great teaching opportunity. I teach them about label ingredients and how to evaluate food products, so they were able to use their newly-acquired skills while enjoying their snacks.\r\n\r\nI still have a great stash of snacks that will last throughout the semester. The whiteboards are used to enable authentic critical thinking in the classroom. After a brief introduction, the students attempt to tackle the concept up at the whiteboards. Their non-permanent nature gives students the courage to make mistakes. Since they are up on the walls, they are less on their phones, alert, and enable me to more easily check in on what they are thinking. Since they are up on the wall, it enables students who are stuck, but too shy to ask for help, to take a peek at another group's work for a hint. Of course, I can see easily see if they are stuck and step in at more appropriate times. Gone are the days where I'm not sure where a kid is at, so I ask \"How are you doing? Have any questions?\" Since I know exactly where they are at, it is very easy to ask very pointed questions. Since they are already standing, it is more organic for students to walk over and offer help.\r\nI appreciate your donation since I won't have to dip into my own wallet to create some half-solution that'll need to be replaced every few years. You might have seen on my previous project how students are assigned jobs to take care of the classroom, so you can know that these boards will be taken care of and hopefully last a long while. In fact, a funny moment happens in class once in a while where students try to wipe away the expo marker with their hands and they get correct by their peers to wipe it away with the towels I provide.\r\nMy next step as an educator is to keep improving my practice, to ensure the best for my students. I'm working on incorporating even more of the findings from Dr. Peter Liljedahl's research on promoting thinking in the classroom. Incorporating his work so far has been transformative, so I'm excited to continue. I imagine my next step, after spending some more effort on implementation, is to find some coaching or \"audit\" so I can identify areas of improvement.\r\nYour generosity is much appreciated.","fullyFundedDate":1740752531995,"projectUrl":"project/building-thinking-classrooms-in-mathemat/8946518/","projectTitle":"Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kozinski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5290838_orig.jpg?crop=278,278,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723498084537","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5290838"},{"teacherId":9315126,"projectId":8985363,"letterContent":"On behalf of our students, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation to the Biome project. Since this project was focused on me getting organized, the students are aware of only a fraction of the benefit this has provided. Even so, that fraction is indeed very present. I used the whiteboard paper to turn my cabinets into whiteboards, which I'm currently using to assign classroom chores. This enables the class to help me with the organization! For example, I have my more trustworthy students inform me when I'm running low on supplies, and they'll go a print extra copies. This student autonomy was enabled by your generous donation of the whiteboard paper.\r\n That being said, out of everyone, I, personally, appreciate everyone's generosity the most. I am very much appreciating the luxury of being more efficient at my job, lessening the amount of work I need to take home. The improved work/life balance can't be understated. An example of this is using the large binders to organize copies of all my assignments, answer keys, and projects, for all of the different courses I teach. A couple years ago, I would make answer keys and simply lose track of them! This year, I was a little better, I had them in a folder, but I had to shuffle quite a bit of paper to find the right answer key depending on what I'm grading (students work on different material in my class so I'm constantly changing keys).\r\n My next step is to focus on my students. I read quite a bit of research on promoting thinking classrooms, and I am looking to implement it. I currently have a project to get a big whiteboard for my backwall of the classroom. The idea is that students are thinking more and using phones less when they are standing and discussing math on a non-permanent surface rather than sitting in a traditional style classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1731501555569,"projectUrl":"project/starting-off-the-year-organized-and-prep/8692998/","projectTitle":"Starting Off the Year Organized and Prepared!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kozinski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5290838_orig.jpg?crop=278,278,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723498084537","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5290838"},{"teacherId":7182561,"projectId":8304043,"letterContent":"My students use the muffle furnace that you funded to determine the heavy metal content of various samples. Future projects are already planned to make good use of your generous donation, and I look forward to continuing to test the results of these projects.\r\n\r\nWhen we first unboxed the muffle furnace, my students and fellow teachers were very excited. I had used a similar oven in graduate school, but others had never heard of ashing materials with a muffle furnace. We had to learn how to set it up and use it, but then we were able to use it effectively. Students were pleased with their results.
