Students practiced synthesis, research and inference skills while developing a deeper understanding of how Afghanistan has become what it is today. Perhaps more importantly, they developed an empathetic perspective by analyzing the plight of Amir; his complex relationship with his father; and his quest for redemption. They then analyzed the female perspective through the lens of Mariam and Laila in A Thousand Splendid Suns. \r\n\r\nThe students recorded their research, analysis and thinking in two primary ways—accordion book and cyberjournal. The accordion book served as a space for students to explore the personal responses to the learning they were experiencing and convey their thinking through reflection, drawings, symbols and images. After organizing thinking in their accordion books, students practice formal writing practices in a digital portfolio system that included a blog we called the cyberjournal. One of the images I sent shows a student working in this portfolio, constructing a critical review essay in response to A Thousand Splendid Suns. Here are some of the things students wrote about the novel you so graciously provided our classroom: \r\n\r\n\"In A Thousand Splendid Suns, both Mariam and Laila endure the oppressive structures and systems embedded within Afghanistan's patriarchal and traditional society. These oppressive structures and norms are not only reflected in the Taliban's strict enforcement and interpretation of Sharia law but also in Rasheed's violent actions. These structures reflect the broader destruction of freedom and opportunity as a result of the relentless violence that has plagued the nation for several decades at the hands of the Soviet Union and the Taliban, a reality present in both novels.\"\r\n\r\n\"In comparison to The Kite Runner, I think that this book was more sensitive, -- it felt more consequential. Hosseini highlights the social hierarchy and the place of women in Afghan society, and how women are put down by society, treated as the property of the men around them, and not afforded opportunities to live life the way they might want to. \" \r\n\r\n\"I would rate this book a 3/5 it was a good break with a very powerful message and backstory and I also liked that it related to real world issues. I enjoyed learning more about what is happening in the rest of the world, and what others have to go through everyday life.\"\r\n\r\n\"How I would rate this book is 5/5 stars, because it covers difficult topics very well, especially knowing that it was written all by a man, through the lens of a woman in the story. It surprised me at moments, due to the fact I had no clue what was going to happen to Mariam or Laila next, because of how unpredictable Rasheed's behavior was towards them.
