I offered this class to two third grade classes, one fourth grade class and one fifth grade class. I started off our session by talking about famous Pueblo artist Maria Montoya Martinez. We watched a brief video on her legacy and looked at multiple photos of her art work. The kids loved learning about the early style of pottery making on the Pueblo lands. Before we got into coaster making. We went over how people can make pots or mugs with clay as well. I had a few students who have done pottery in the past and were an asset to the conversation about pottery. That led us into talking about the difference of air dry clay and clay that has to be fired. I explained that the air dry clay would only take about 24 hours to dry. \r\n\r\nAt this time the students where very excited to get the clay out and begin our project. I separated out 90 balls of clay and we began to flatten our clay out to about 1/4 of an inch thick. The students were then given different options for their pattern. The patterns are made out of the top layer of napkins. After they chose their patterns they placed them on top of the clay and carefully smoothed out the pattern. I then used a mason jar lid and cut the clay and pattern into a circle. Once the circle was made we transferred their work to a drying rack. I took the coasters to my room and painted them with a gloss varnish. With the left over scraps some students created their own creations. \r\n\r\nEach student was able to take their coaster home or gift it to a friend/ loved one. The students loved doing this project and they loved taking their work home. I have some left over clay that I plan on doing a pop up lunch activity for students who are interested. \r\n\r\nThank you all that donated to my project, \"Throwing Ideas Into School, Where Education Meets Art.\"","fullyFundedDate":1764617404545,"projectUrl":"project/throwing-ideas-into-school-where-educat/9899677/","projectTitle":"Throwing Ideas Into School, Where Education Meets Art!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Drew","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10352501_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763354807608","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10352501"},{"teacherId":9509031,"projectId":9220068,"letterContent":"On behalf of my students and myself, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for your generous support of our classroom project through DonorsChoose. Thanks to your contributions, we were able to acquire classroom headphones, flexible seating options, and STEM bin materials such as Play-Doh.\r\n\r\nThese resources have significantly enhanced the learning environment in our classroom. The headphones allow students to fully engage in digital learning without distraction, fostering independence and focus. The addition of flexible seating has provided students with greater comfort and choice, which has led to improved engagement and collaboration. Furthermore, the STEM bins have introduced new opportunities for hands-on exploration, creativity, and problem-solving, all of which are essential skills for their academic and personal growth.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has created a more supportive and productive learning atmosphere, one where students feel comfortable, motivated, and excited to learn.
