Your kindness has made such a meaningful impact on my classroom and my sixth graders' learning experience.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, my students are beginning their middle school journey in a space that feels calm, engaging, and full of excitement for learning. The new bookshelf beautifully displays our classroom library and invites students to explore books and journaling prompts that nurture their love for reading and writing. The globe and color-in world map have already sparked so many curious questions about geography and the world beyond our classroom walls!\r\n\r\nThe stickers, fidget tools, and decorations are helping to create a positive and welcoming environment where students can stay focused and feel proud of their growth. With your funding, I was able to attend a 6-week summer intensive training with Breathe for Change. As a result of this training I was able to learn trauma informed, evidence-based social emotional learning strategies as well as complete my 200-hour yoga teacher training. My goal was to complete the training and have new SEL tools to share with my students (and colleagues) to support their social emotional well-being. In the process, I had the opportunity to be reflective on my teaching practices and be more mindful of my own personal growth and transformation by applying meditation, breathwork, and yoga to my daily routine. Having completed the course, I am now a Social Emotional Learning Facilitator (SEL*F) and yoga teacher. \r\n\r\nIn our kindergarten classroom, we have diverse learning and sensory needs. It has been encouraging to see the growth of mindfulness practices and empathy in our classroom. My co-teacher and I have taught students to recognize when their bodies are in need of regulation (i.e. having too much energy, feeling upset/frustrated, or needing a boost in energy) and tools that they can use for self-regulation. For example, students have been taught a few breathing techniques over the course of the first 6 weeks of school including: rainbow breaths, flower breathing, lion breaths, and smell the flower/blow out the candle. Each technique was explicitly taught and modeled for students to use. Now, 11 weeks into the school year, students have the choice of which breathing technique they'd like to use when prompted to do so. This is especially helpful when we are seated on the carpet for whole group instruction/learning activities and students need to reset their bodies and refocus their attention. We have talked about how deep breathing brings more oxygen into our bodies, can stimulate the brain, and that each of us can have a preference on which breathing technique we want to use. It has been helpful in demonstrating how we have different needs and it is ok if ours differ from our classmates. It is really neat to look out at the children sitting on the carpet squares in front of me, each breathing with the technique they prefer; we applaud their autonomy as well being respectful of others' need for space when doing so. We have also observed students using some of the breathing techniques when they are feeling frustrated/upset, both with and without adult support, depending on the student. \r\n\r\nKindergarteners also LOVE to move their bodies and need to move frequently throughout their school day! Research also supports movement, especially whole body movement and crossing the midline helps students retain information better. Watching them light up when we announce that we are going to do yoga is absolutely magical! They will frequently ask when we are doing yoga again and they are eager to demonstrate their ability to do poses such as downward facing dog, mountain, and tree pose, to name a few. Adding mindful movement in the classroom has allowed us to talk about how each of our bodies is wonderful and unique and we do the movement and range of motion that feels best for us. My co-teacher and I also use this as an opportunity to facilitate talking about our strengths and encouraging others to (1) try new things, (2) maintain a \"can do\" attitude, (3) use positive self-talk/affirmations. As teachers we have modeled what positive affirmations look/sound like and how to give others support when they are giving their best effort. It is really nice to see/hear students giving each other a compliment such as \"Nice job\" or \"Wow, you're really good\") without any adult prompting. We truly are seeing empathy blossoming within our classroom community as a result of time spent doing SEL lessons and techniques learned from the Breathe for Change training program! \r\n\r\nOur classroom has been impacted so positively by this training. As an educator, I have found that all things which happen to adults also happen to children. We try our best as caretakers to create a safe and happy space while at school, but we cannot always protect students when they are at home. They bring their experiences with them to school, and it is our responsibility to provide them with tools to successfully navigate their experiences. I truly believe that social emotional learning is paramount in our toolbox to this goal. Additionally, as an educator myself these tools help me to be able to handle stressful situations in my own classroom and model that behavior to my students.","fullyFundedDate":1716472628206,"projectUrl":"project/flow-through-what-you-go-throughfor-kin/8401297/","projectTitle":"Flow Through What You Go Through—For Kindergarten!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sandrich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9545477_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1715461959188","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/thea-sandrich"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_40873","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":528,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":60,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":17,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":80.2,"schoolId":40873,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/pleasant-valley-school-district/el-descanso-school/40873"}
