Your generosity made a meaningful difference in my students' learning experiences, and I am incredibly grateful.\r\n\r\nIt was wonderful to watch my students engage with a story that felt culturally relevant and reflected experiences familiar to many of them. As they read, they strengthened essential literacy skills such as making inferences, citing textual evidence, analyzing characters, and participating in thoughtful discussions. Because the text connected to their own lives and communities, students were eager to ask questions, make personal connections, and share their perspectives.\r\n\r\nOur conversations extended beyond literacy. The story gave students the opportunity to thoughtfully explore topics such as immigration, identity, culture, and social status in an age-appropriate way. They demonstrated empathy, critical thinking, and respect as they listened to one another's experiences and viewpoints, creating meaningful classroom discussions that I know will stay with them.\r\n\r\nWe were also able to connect the book to our end-of-year celebration by bringing elements of the story to life. Students were thrilled to experience real-life items from the book, including cantaritos and eloteros, which helped deepen their understanding while celebrating their cultural heritage. Seeing their excitement as they recognized these familiar traditions and connected them back to the text was truly special.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive experience. Students read independently, with partners, and as a whole class while discussing ideas, asking questions, and learning from one another. This project helped create joyful moments that fostered both stronger readers and a stronger classroom community.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for investing in my students and making experiences like this possible. Your kindness and generosity helped create lasting memories and meaningful learning opportunities that my students will carry with them long after they left our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1755738704851,"projectUrl":"project/culturally-relevant-reading-for-future-l/9579033/","projectTitle":"Culturally Relevant Reading for Future Leaders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Melendez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10170947"},{"teacherId":10038192,"projectId":9719308,"letterContent":"Thank you for increasing the impact of the library on our youngest students! This is a fun program that gets students to expand their love for reading by challenging them to read at least fourteen books, but some read as many as all 28 on the list! These students are the future's leaders in communication, writing, education, and in whatever they pursue.\r\n\r\nThe Battle of the Book event is the highlight of the year for these students. They spend a day with like-minded book lovers. They are inspired to pursue their passion when they know there are others who enjoy reading as much as they do!
