Recently, we used them for our Hurricane Katrina media study project where students compared personal narratives with news coverage. Having their own journals allowed them to capture questions, reactions, and personal reflections in real time. One student even remarked, \"This feels like I'm keeping my own history book.\"\r\n\r\n** Student reactions:\r\nWhen I first passed out the journals, the room buzzed with excitement. Many students flipped through the blank pages, already imagining how they would fill them. A few commented that it felt \"grown-up\" to have a dedicated book just for their voice and ideas. For students who don't always feel confident writing, the journals have become a safe, personal space to try.\r\n\r\n** Next steps:\r\nWe're now beginning our unit on Othello, and the journals are becoming acting scripts, character diaries, and spaces for personal connections. Another reason that the items donated are appreciated is due to the face that most libraries have a barrier.
