This environment has not only supported independent engagement but also encouraged students to build new friendships and interact more positively with their peers.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're taking the next big step by partnering with our school's engineering club to design and build a mobile sensory cart. The headphones have also been critical for days when there is audio they need to listen to independently.\r\n\r\nWe additionally do a lot of work on paper. We are doing a unit about art. Recently, I gave the students 20 minutes to create a work of art and then they talked about it with a classmate, making sure to use the vocabulary from the unit. For this it was helpful to have the additional markers as well as the Gorilla Mounting Putty. I put the students artwork on the wall after they did their activity using the putty. While this activity had an educational focus of students talking about the inspiration for their work of art, what it represents and the art style, it also helped build classroom community. The students were excited to make their own art and show each other what they did. Also across different classes they were excited to see what their friends from a different hour created. We are finishing up the painting part this week as part of our final presentation for the semester. I combined the art work component with a project that required students to use an AI chatbot school approved to conduct an interview with the artist of their choice from Spain or Latin America. Students interviewed the artist with a few starter questions from me and then created their own questions to ask the artist. It was really fun to see what kids wanted to know, they asked artists how they would describe a perfect day, if they had ever been in love, if they enjoyed listening to music while they worked, the kinds of questions young people are always interested in. \r\nStudents created a slideshow and presented artist in the 1st person. (as if they were them) \r\n avoiding the copy paste text from the web. Students presented their slides and then compared a work of choice to one they replicated. Coincidentally the painting portion of this assignment came on the last week of regular classes before exams.
