My middle school SDC students absolutely love our Scholastic News days. As soon as I hand out the magazines, everyone is engaged and excited. They really enjoy having their own hard copies to flip through, and it's honestly the most focused and invested I've seen them during lessons.\r\n\r\nI love using the digital activities that go with each issue, too. The videos and vocabulary previews make it easy to frontload information before we read together, and the articles fit perfectly with so many of their IEP goals—especially fluency and finding text-based evidence. Even my principal came in during one of our lessons and was so impressed that she asked me more about the curriculum!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, these magazines have become a truly positive part of our classroom routine. One student, in particular, inspired our journey into 3D printing. Their growth in both knowledge and confidence has been remarkable from the moment the printer arrived to the day we received the filament. They took the lead in learning how to change colors, calibrate the printer, and fine tune settings to achieve the perfect print.\r\n\r\nThis is just one example of the ripple effect your donation creates. As luck (or bad luck!) would have it, a student had a string break in the days following the replacement strings' arrival, so I was able to put a new string on and the student continued playing and learning. From our Girls Who Code Club to our 6th-grade STEM students, the printer is transforming abstract concepts into tangible, hands-on projects. Most recently, students were using the printer to design and create custom 1/2\" PVC to 2-liter bottle components for our own pressurized air rockets.\r\nFor 6th graders, many of whom are new to the school, the printer immediately generated excitement. This enthusiasm was used to introduce a design lesson using Tinkercad, where students connected what they were learning to the printer's output. This provided a dynamic entry point into STEM and introduced the Z-axis. Most 6th graders have only encountered X and Y coordinates. Learning about the Z-axis is powerful for young math learners because it bridges the abstract concepts of geometry with real-world, tangible experiences. \r\nI am just at the beginning of my journey of incorporating 3D printing into my classroom. I look forward to learning more and expanding the experiences for my students.
