The new Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems have been a tremendous addition to our reading experience. These books do much more than entertain—they serve as powerful teaching tools for emotional intelligence, friendship, and personal growth. Through Gerald and Piggie's adventures, my students are learning invaluable life lessons, such as the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication. The characters navigate challenges like fear, disappointment, and excitement, providing great opportunities to discuss how we can manage our own feelings and support each other. These lessons are deeply meaningful to young readers, especially when they can relate them to their own lives.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading isn't just about decoding words; it's about connection. We often read these books together as a class, taking time to explore the characters' emotions and how they work through problems. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts on the story, reflect on how the characters handle situations, and even act out their favorite scenes. These activities build their comprehension, emotional awareness, and teamwork skills. I've noticed that many of my students—especially those who are more reserved—have become more engaged in these discussions. They feel comfortable expressing themselves and seeing the value in different perspectives, much like Gerald and Piggie do.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting this project. Your contribution has helped create a classroom where reading is not only an academic activity, but a gateway to learning life skills that will serve these children for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1744290644116,"projectUrl":"project/shelf-improvement/9203963/","projectTitle":"Shelf Improvement","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Aguilar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9915072_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738889389750","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9915072"},{"teacherId":8914383,"projectId":8988772,"letterContent":"This was an amazing night that parents were able to engage with their child and have fun on campus. There was lot of conversations and laughter!\r\n\r\nThe students were so excited to show their parents their classroom and how they work on projects in school. I enjoyed seeing and hearing the parents talk and interact with their child. We really strive to show our parents things that they can do that does not involve electronics.
