Rather than reading these books as stand-alone English assignments, we read each text during the unit where its themes connect directly to what students are learning in healthcare.\r\n\r\nOut of My Mind helps students explore cerebral palsy, disabilities, communication barriers, patient advocacy, empathy, and the importance of seeing the person beyond a diagnosis. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks introduces students to medical research, informed consent, patient rights, ethics, health disparities, and the lasting impact one patient can have on medicine and science.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and connected to real-world healthcare. Students read and discuss the texts as a class, make connections to healthcare concepts and patient experiences, and consider situations from both the patient and healthcare professional perspectives. After completing each book, students also view its film adaptation. They compare the book and film, reflect on how the healthcare issues are portrayed, and explain what they learned about the impact healthcare professionals, medical decisions, and healthcare systems can have on patients and families.\r\n\r\nThese books have helped students understand that healthcare education is about much more than learning medical terminology and clinical skills. Through the experiences of Melody and Henrietta Lacks, students are developing reading comprehension, critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, and patient-centered thinking. Most importantly, these stories help bring the healthcare concepts we study to life and encourage my students to think about the kind of healthcare professionals they hope to become.","fullyFundedDate":1744290649105,"projectUrl":"project/inspiring-books-for-future-healthcare-wo/9232518/","projectTitle":"Inspiring Books for Future Healthcare Workers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hammond","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9687160"},{"teacherId":7728654,"projectId":8246906,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your participation in this project! Students couldn't believe they'd get to build something as personal and unique as a guitar. Watching their faces light up as they held their finished instruments for the first time was a moment I'll never forget—it was pride, accomplishment, and pure joy all at once.\r\n\r\nNow, our next step is fine-tuning and customizing each guitar. Students are learning how to sand, stain, and finish their projects, adding their own creative touches before testing out the sound.
