Books from the A Little Spot series, for example, helped students identify and name their emotions, giving them a vocabulary to express how they feel. They also taught strategies for calming down, showing empathy, and building positive relationships with classmates. The Jiggers series connected those lessons to real-life scenarios, such as facing worries or fears, so students see themselves in the stories and learn that it's okay to have big feelings—and that they can manage them in healthy ways. These lessons are woven into our daily reading time, making literacy not only about words on a page but also about understanding ourselves and each other.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is interactive, collaborative, and joyful. We often read these books aloud together, pausing to ask questions, share personal connections, or role-play situations from the stories. This creates a safe space where students feel comfortable talking about emotions and practicing the strategies they've learned. I've noticed particular excitement from students who sometimes struggle with behavior or shyness; they light up when they recognize themselves in a character and proudly share, \"That's how I feel sometimes!\" or \"I tried that strategy at home.\" These moments show me that the books are making a meaningful difference—not just in reading skills, but in building confident, compassionate kids.","fullyFundedDate":1746785635251,"projectUrl":"project/building-bridges-empowering-hearts-thro/9262949/","projectTitle":"Building Bridges: Empowering Hearts Through Social-Emotional Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10002932_orig.jpg?crop=882,882,x541,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752764534581","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10002932"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6356","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":670,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":27,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":68.6,"schoolId":6356,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Duncan Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Duncan Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/spartanburg-school-district-5/duncan-elementary-school/6356"}
