We started small with 15 students (of both genders) and 3 teachers, to test our club's format and ensure we had adequate helping hands to ensure our students' success. With the materials donated, we were able to create individual kits for each student that included all of the supplies needed to complete their project. When they were first given their kits they were so excited to embark on this new challenge.\r\n\r\nFor many of our members, it was the first time they had ever been a part of a school club. All but 1 student came to the club with no formal experience crocheting and 2 of the teachers also came without experience. (That has been an unexpected positive outcome - as the students are getting to witness and experience their teachers learning a skill right alongside them).\r\n\r\nIt was slow going to start, with only 6 stitches completed in our first hour of meeting... but in every meeting since then the students have grown more comfortable with their new skills and we are starting to see some great progress on their plushy project. The smiles on their faces when they share their progress with others are truly a product of your kind donations.\r\n\r\nAs they start to see the end of their progress within reach, many have brought up that they would like to be able to continue their new hobby independently. When I tell them that their new crochet hooks, stitch markers, and patterns are theirs to keep when they have completed their project - they are almost giddy with excitement (definitely a rare thing to witness in middle school).\r\n\r\nAs we see more students coming closer to finishing, we have realized that we do have quite a bit of yarn that was not used and we intend to continue the club with new final projects and also invite new students to join in the fun.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, and my students as well, we thank you for seeing the possibility of our project and investing in our learning. While some may not walk away with crochet as their new favorite hobby, they are all walking away with a new skill and the knowledge that they can learn new things and take on hard tasks.","fullyFundedDate":1732498549431,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-middle-schoolers-to-crochet/8476293/","projectTitle":"Teaching Middle Schoolers to Crochet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Legard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9580268_orig.jpg?crop=1105,1105,x320,y402&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1719732345681","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9580268"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_42678","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":907,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":26,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":73,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":42678,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Desert Hills Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Desert Hills Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/kennewick-school-district-17/desert-hills-middle-school/42678"}
