I do a class book club, where we read and have discussions about the book as a class. I also do something called \"First Chapter Thursday\", where I read the first chapter of a different book every week. This allows students to hear the first chapter of a book and see if they would like to read it. I love doing this, because it may not be a book students would choose just by looking at it. By hearing that first chapter, it may change their mind and become a book they love!\r\n\r\nWith these new books in our classroom, students are provided with a variety of different genres, including nonfiction and historical fiction. Students are able to learn about historical figures and events., while enjoying a good book at the same time! These go along with lessons from our curriculum and really help students stay engaged! My whole class is so excited about the new books and they have all been wanting to read them. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we read every single day. We have independent reading time, along with reading throughout the day with our curriculum. Students who are reading quietly can even earn time to read in our Reading Corner! I highly encourage reading at home as well. Reading is extremely important in our classroom and getting to add these exciting, new books has been wonderful for my students! Our school discourages living things such as hamsters and other small animals in the classroom. They do allow fish. \r\n I have students growing plants and felt that fish would be a chance for students to observe and participate in the care of animal life. The students were excited when they saw the aquarium and immediately wanted to plan what to put in it. Now the students love to watch the movements and actions of the fish especially when they feed them. They have had the experience of the tank needing to be cleaned and they have also had the experience of a fish dieing. I have five fish at this time with three varieties. \r\n We are on our second round of plants at this time. The students are growing garden vegetables and hope to have produce before school is out. In our limited space the aquarium is the centerpiece of out living things space. The students study the relationship between aquarium size and the type of fish they can have. They also have to determine which type of fish can be put together in an aquarium. \r\n The aquarium also seems to have a calming effect on many of the students. I often see a student take a break from their work to watch the fish and the go back to work after a minute or two.\r\n Once again thank you for helping fund this aquarium and making it possible to have this experience for my students. It has a positive impact on my students and enhanced their learning experience.","fullyFundedDate":1733251208886,"projectUrl":"project/providing-living-things-in-the-classroom/8586982/","projectTitle":"Providing Living Things In The Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dille","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9635065"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_41332","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":327,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":48,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"36.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":65.1,"schoolId":41332,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Deer Trail School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Deer Trail School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/deer-trail-school-dist-26-j/deer-trail-school/41332"}
