Because of your generosity, my 6th grade English learners now have access to high-interest novels especially the Harry Potter series that are transforming how they experience reading.\r\n\r\nMany of our students are developing English while also learning how to be confident readers. These new books introduce rich vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and meaningful themes such as friendship, courage, and standing up for what is right. As we read, students practice key literacy skills like making predictions, visualizing scenes, analyzing characters, and discussing plot events using academic language. The familiar and engaging storylines help students take risks with English because they are excited to understand what happens next.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks lively and joyful. Students read independently, listen to chapters read aloud, and participate in small-group and whole-class discussions. It's especially powerful to see English learners eagerly raising their hands to share ideas, ask questions, and make connections to the story. Some students who were once hesitant to read are now asking if they can take the books home or read ahead. One student proudly shared that this was the first \"big chapter book\" they had ever read and they couldn't wait to finish and move on to the next!\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than provide books; it has built confidence, curiosity, and a genuine love of reading. Thank you for believing in our students and for helping them strengthen their English skills through stories they truly enjoy.","fullyFundedDate":1764598640744,"projectUrl":"project/building-english-skills-through-books/9521124/","projectTitle":"Building English Skills Through Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Abbasova","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10103700_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754073696238","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10103700"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110448","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":95,"numTeachers":4,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":41,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"23.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":76.5,"schoolId":110448,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dayton Smart Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dayton Smart Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/ohio-department-of-education/dayton-smart-bilingual-academy/110448"}
