My students are enjoying the novel White Bird by R.J. Palacio. We are currently reading the book, and their curiosity, interest, and critical thinking skills are growing every day as we read, discuss, and write about the novel and the historical period in which it is set. Learning about this topic is interesting and surprising for my students as they discuss the unfair treatment of disenfranchised groups. \r\n\r\nThe class has been learning to find text evidence for the inferences. Reading this story has prompted many interesting and challenging discussions. Students shared inferences such as \"friendship requires being there for someone even when it's hard or dangerous\" and \"standing up to wrong means being scared and doing it anyway\". As students identify text evidence for their assertions, the discussions are enriched, and students' learning and growing are evident. \r\n\r\nAs we move toward closing this book study, it is also clear that it is a natural transition for our class to finish out our year with our social justice unit as we will examine others who have been notable \"upstanders.\" This novel is the ideal transition to looking at how others can help participate and create the next better thing in our communities. I am so grateful for all the donors' support in helping me bring this story and the many lessons it offers and transitions to for my 5th graders this year and in years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1731780577151,"projectUrl":"project/past-and-future-live-in-the-present-with/8876346/","projectTitle":"Past and Future Live in the Present With Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wakeman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2040715_orig.jpg?crop=2096,2096,x1935,y887&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729563969075","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2040715"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4019","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":344,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":52,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":31,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":86.4,"schoolId":4019,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dayton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dayton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-lorenzo-unified-school-district/dayton-elementary-school/4019"}
