The morning after the box arrived, our custodians assembled the carrel before students showed up for school. (Thank you to our amazing custodians!) It blends in beautifully with the rest of our classroom like it was meant to be. Its shiny new polish adds vibrancy to the space.\r\n\r\nThe carrel was immediately a go-to spot for a couple of students needing a focused space to take their test. For others, it has been a quiet work or \"office\" space for them. One student asked, \"May I sit there because I really need to focus, so I can do well on this test?\" What great self-awareness and use of resources. I've enjoyed watching them take shared ownership of the desk.","fullyFundedDate":1760720188001,"projectUrl":"project/corral-the-carrel/9520725/","projectTitle":"Corral the Carrel!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Payne","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp651048_orig.jpg?crop=328,328,x341,y44&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692485949405","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/srpayne"},{"teacherId":651048,"projectId":9496410,"letterContent":"Having the tools to help students get and stay organized is a game changer. Their engagement has increased tenfold. \r\n\r\nThe students love the comic phonics books. They read the stories not just because they are engaging, but also because they are middle school looking which is a contrast to the elementary feel that so many decodable books have. The drawing boards are like magic--magic in how they motivate the students and in their functionality. The boards lack of permanence reminds the students that practice is an opportunity to learn. Mistakes are okay and give chances for them to grow. \r\n\r\nWe are beyond excited to try out all of the materials--the puzzles and puzzle books, too.","fullyFundedDate":1739691728385,"projectUrl":"project/lights-books-art/9024339/","projectTitle":"Lights! Thank you so much for your contribution to our classroom. Because of your help, we were able to spend approximately 6 weeks reading and discussing The Outsiders. \r\n\r\nSome highlights of this unit included:\r\n-- A Mob Mentality Activity in which students explored their opinions on trends from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s and if they are influenced by their peers. \r\n-- Nothing Gold Can Stay Poetry Analysis. Students dove deep into the poem \"Nothing Gold Can Stay\" by Robert Frost that is highlighted in the story. They analyzed the poem and connected it to different aspects of The Outsiders. They showed their understanding by creating a sunshine with the rays being different lines of analysis, as showcased in the photos. \r\n-- The Outsiders final project! Students were given the opportunity to choose from 6 different project options. The options were as follows: Family Struggles Showcase, The Outsiders Art Gallery, Newspaper Report, Adolescence Then vs Now, Facebook Profiles from the 60s, and If I Were in The Outsiders. Students were able to choose the project that best suited their personal interests and passions to showcase their understanding of the novel. \r\n-- Soc Hop! We had a Soc Hop in which students were able to dress like a Soc or a Greaser and we danced to tunes of the 60s. \r\n-- The Outsiders Movie. We culminated the unit by watching the movie and having the students compare the book and its film adaptation. We asked them which they found more impactful, the film or the movie. Most students said the book was most impactful :)\r\n\r\nThe kids had an amazing time reading the book and we are so appreciative of your donation that allowed us to explore this novel!!","fullyFundedDate":1726800128534,"projectUrl":"project/the-outsiders-bringing-back-the-classic/8799179/","projectTitle":"The Outsiders: Bringing Back the Classics!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fender","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7614487_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726677531889","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7614487"},{"teacherId":9759712,"projectId":8799727,"letterContent":"I hope this message finds you well! I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation to our 7th grade English Language Arts program at Davis Drive Middle School. Thanks to your support, we were able to purchase copies of The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton for each of my students.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your contribution has been profound. Our students absolutely loved reading The Outsiders. It sparked rich discussions about themes of identity, belonging, and the challenges that come with growing up. Many students shared how they felt personally connected to the characters, and for many, it was their first experience with a novel that felt so real and relevant to their own lives. The story helped foster empathy, build critical thinking skills, and encourage a love for reading that will continue to grow long after the book is finished.\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, every student in my class had access to their own copy of the book—something we know is essential for creating an engaging and immersive learning experience. With a book in every hand, we were able to dive deeper into the text, explore important literary concepts, and create a classroom environment where every voice could be heard. Your contribution helped make that possible.\r\n\r\nThe importance of having books like The Outsiders in the hands of students cannot be overstated. It's not just about reading a book—it's about sparking imagination, building community, and creating opportunities for personal growth. Thanks to you, these students now have the chance to be a part of something larger than themselves, and your generosity has made a lasting impact on their educational journey.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my students and myself, I want to thank you once again for your kindness and support. Your donation is an investment in the future of these young learners, and we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1727028015283,"projectUrl":"project/the-outsiders-bringing-back-the-fun-clas/8799727/","projectTitle":"The Outsiders-Bringing Back the Fun Classics!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cox","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9759712_orig.jpg?crop=1014,1014,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726843605249","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9759712"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1820","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":995,"numTeachers":74,"percentFrplEligible":12,"percentAsian":41,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":85.4,"schoolId":1820,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Davis Drive Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Davis Drive Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/davis-drive-middle-school/1820"}
