Each game supports language development in a different way. Blank Slate has been fantastic for building word associations, vocabulary flexibility, and making inferences. Stare! helps students practice descriptive language and memory strategies as they recreate details using precise vocabulary. Guess Who? gives us a natural way to work on formulating questions, using attributes, and developing perspective-taking. Rapid Rumble and Tapple are perfect for quick-thinking word retrieval, category knowledge, and verbal fluency. Taco vs Burrito has been great for strategic thinking, explaining choices, and using sequencing language as students build and modify their \"meals.\" One of my favorite moments was watching a group of students who rarely participate jump into a fast-paced round of Tapple, cheering each other on while practicing category vocabulary without even realizing how much language work they were doing.\r\nMiddle schoolers LOVE games, and their reactions when these arrived were priceless. Several students immediately said, \"Wait, we get to play these in speech?!\" They explored the boxes, asked how each game worked, and even started previewing vocabulary they might need to win. The excitement made them more willing to speak up, take risks, and engage in language tasks that often feel intimidating in more traditional formats.\r\nWe're now moving into activities that push higher-level expressive and receptive language skills, things like elaborating on answers, using academic vocabulary, organizing spoken explanations, and participating in structured discussions. The games you provided will be woven into upcoming lessons focused on: oral narratives and retellings, flexible thinking and word finding, perspective-taking and social communication, building more complex sentences and explanations. These games make practice feel meaningful, social, and age-appropriate, and they give students confidence to use language in ways that carry over into their classrooms.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our middle school speech-language program. Your generosity has already created more engagement, more communication, and more moments where students feel successful using their voices.","fullyFundedDate":1754661756775,"projectUrl":"project/language-growth-project/9533355/","projectTitle":"Language Growth Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Losada","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9727253"},{"teacherId":10171704,"projectId":9580642,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your help! However, due to language barriers and varying learning needs, our kids can struggle with learning. Your donation of the sticky chart paper and permanent markers has already helped our students. The day we received your generous gifts, students were able to work collaboratively to create plot diagrams of a novel they are reading. They did this in small groups, and this helped them with communication, teamwork, questioning, and learning from one another. They were highly engaged, especially when using chalk markers to write their responses directly on the table within a Punnett Square outlined with color-coded tape. Typically, they would complete a worksheet, but this hands-on approach made the learning experience much more interactive and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nIn addition to working with Punnett Squares, students created critters out of styrofoam, using genotypes to determine their phenotypes. This activity reinforced their understanding of inherited traits in a creative and meaningful way. I plan to take this a step further by having students generate possible offspring for their styrofoam critters, allowing them to apply their knowledge in an extended, real-world context.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for generously providing my class with the necessary supplies for these projects.
