I reward students who earn strong quiz grades, follow directions during fire drills, and remain focused and respectful during class activities. The snacks are also especially helpful at the end of the day when some students are hungry and struggling to concentrate. Right now, students are working on creating books that focus on social skills such as cooperation, empathy, and communication, and the snacks help keep them motivated and engaged during longer work periods. \r\n\r\nMy students were genuinely excited and grateful when they learned snacks were available in the classroom. Many of them immediately became more motivated to stay on task and meet expectations, knowing their effort would be recognized. Several students expressed appreciation and shared that it helped them feel supported and cared for, especially on long or difficult days.\r\n\r\nThe next steps include completing and presenting their social skills books, where students will explain the importance of these skills in everyday life. After that, they will begin an HBCU research project for Black History Month, where they will explore historically Black colleges and universities, their history, and their impact.
