All of my students learned to knit at the beginning of fourth grade, and some of them really took to it. Some stay after school one day a week to try new knitting skills or just to knit amongst friends. Some of my former students who are in 5th grade come back too. I make starter needles for them to learn on, but it's great to have needles of different sized and ones with cables so students can be a little more adventurous in trying new patterns.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making these experiences possible. Play with LEGO for the next two classes? Yes please! \r\n\r\nLet me explain. Last year, Oakland Unified started a program called Universal Extended Day. A small group of students would stay an extra half hour after school on Wednesdays, and they would be provided with either intervention or enrichment at the teacher's discretion. Half an hour can fly by, and it isn't always well-used if students feel like they're having to do extra work. I decided to use the time to teach students executive functioning skills. We spent most of our time cutting, gluing, and reflecting in an interactive notebook while discussing skills like planning, organization, and time management. We usually had fun, but there was little opportunity to practice skills during sessions.\r\n\r\nThis year, I wanted to incorporate more practice by adding a computational thinking element. We've done some unplugged activities and we'll work with coding cubes as time permits. The LEGO SPIKE Essentials are giving my students the change to practice perseverance, organization, and planning while feeding their innate curiosity and desire to build. They were very happy to pair off and follow the step-by-step directions to build carnival rides, taking turns to create a product. My students had a great time collaborating on code to make their rides light up and spin fast! We'll build more\r\n\r\nThank you so much for giving my students the opportunity to practice the skills we've been learning about in a fun and engaging way.
