Attendance is so essential to learning, even in elementary schools. Long term studies have demonstrated that poor attendance in Kindergarten impacts on time high school graduation rates. Students who are chronically absent are more likely to to struggle with reading acquisition. Our school is a walking school, we only have one bus!\r\nMany of our families do not have transportation and when the weather turns poor, the blocks of walking are uncomfortable and can be treacherous. Especially for those parents, pushing younger siblings in strollers. \r\n\r\nThe gifts of winter gloves were helpful to our families as students do seem to easily lose them, and many of our families find the cost of purchasing and arrange transportation to shop for winter gear prohibiting. Our students also love Takis snacks and so our attendance team set up an incentive. During the winter and spring months we tracked attendance by classroom weekly. We announced the classroom attendance standings weekly on our school news. The students encouraged each other to attend, and spoke to their parents about the importance of attendance. Some teachers were inspired by the initiative and made a fabulous bulletin board in support of the attendance initiative. We had our attendance celebration and the winning classes got their Takis parties! We paired the finally week with a spirit week. We dressed Tacky for the Takis Party. We still have plenty Takis left so we are continuing with the competition.
