They did not even realize they were practicing handwriting! I have never had a student ask if they could practice writing \"again\", but everyday they were asking if they could do the designs. After a few days, I introduced the gel writing pad that was only for practicing the designs from the little boards. To hear one of my boys say, \"This is COOL\" and want to do it made my heart smile. Instead of stressing them out and practicing \"boring\" letter formation, this made a very overlooked skill of holding a pencil fun and engaging.\r\n The next step was to pick a design, draw it on the gel pad and THEN try it on a white dry erase board. I think they thought they were doing art instead of learning how to control a pencil for handwriting. Their fine motor and handwriting skills began to improve as their pencil grip, hand strength, and control have developed. These tools made a world of difference in their willingness to get the much needed strength and eye hand coordination that will be needed as they learn how to write words and sentences.
