Many of my students come to school distracted by hunger, which can make it difficult for them to focus, participate, and stay engaged in learning. Having access to snacks has helped remove that barrier.\r\n\r\nWith these snack packs available, students are better able to concentrate on lessons, complete their work, and actively participate in class discussions. I work with my students from the very first day to get students back into a positive mindset and getting them to see success, both personally and academically. \r\n\r\nOne thing that makes a lot of teenagers much more likely to 'try' in math is to do math on a white board - a non-permanent surface. It sounds silly, but often they stare at a blank piece of paper and get overwhelmed or frustrated that it will be 'wrong.' But, that same student will often give it their best attempt on a white board, knowing a quick wipe of an eraser will give them a fresh slate and another attempt! \r\n\r\nBy this point in the year (3/4 of the way through the year), it is not unusual that when students have work time in class, some will be standing at white boards mounted on the wall, some might be writing on an individual white board at their desk, and they work collaboratively with no adult prompting. It might look like mass chaos to someone entering the room for the first time, but it doesn't take long for a visitor to see the amount of math happening!\r\n\r\nRight before the quarter ended, I had one student that was on the cusp of failing. He needed to retake a test, but he had put the proverbial walls up and wasn't letting me help him learn the concept he was struggling with. Well, peers saw his frustration and attempts to give up. They grabbed white boards, came over to the table and basically told me to get lost. Within a single class period, that blank test was covered in corrections, nearby white boards were filled with work, hints, and notes. The next day the student willingly retook (and aced!) the test! The look on his face (and his peers!) when that graded test went back into his hands made a lot of people smile.\r\n\r\nWe greatly appreciate your generosity. My freshmen often find themselves with a Chromebook that lacks a charge. By having chargers available in the classroom, it prevents class time being wasted with students asking peers for a charger and the endless digging through backpacks. \r\n\r\nStudents are provided a charger when they get their Chromebook (7th grade), but by the time they reach high school, that charger may have been lost/damaged. If students don't/cannot purchase a new one, they don't have the opportunity to experience the learning opportunities provided on the Chromebook in all their classes. I also have students who have siblings that 'borrow' the Chromebook chargers and forget to give them back, meaning my student opens their backpack to grab their charger only to find an empty backpack compartment!\r\n\r\nMy students use their Chromebooks for part of almost every class period. They are still doing almost all of their math work on paper, but the Chromebook provides them immediate feedback, the opportunity to experience more real-life math concepts/problems, and they can also see a visual of graphs much easier than they can on paper! All of these learning opportunities led to just about 75% of our students reaching proficient or above status on their Semester 1 final exam!\r\n\r\nThank you for your support of our students. One of the easiest solutions I've found to combat that off-task behavior (and increase student focus!) is wobble stools!\r\n\r\nAs often as possible our students are out of their seats, standing and collaborating at white boards, moving between stations, and doing math. But, there are times that complex algebra problems require pencil/paper and sustained work time. Often that means they are going to be sitting down for an extended length of time. \r\n\r\nStudents now have access to wobble stools in the classroom and it has greatly increased productivity, collaboration, AND cut down on off-task time. These wobble stools move between desks, white boards, groups, with students (and teachers!) utilizing them throughout the day. \r\n\r\nWhile there is an occasional student that doesn't like the wobble stool, that is a very rare comment, and what I love most is the spontaneous collaboration and peer tutoring that happens with these easy seating options. Sometimes a student is stuck on a problem and a peer will grab a stool and jump in to help. Other times they decide their work time is going to be spent on the whiteboard (independently or collaboratively!). The moment the boxes were opened, they gathered around, eagerly pulling out items and asking, \"Can we start using these now?\" The energy in the room was contagious. \r\n\r\nThe students quickly found a place to put the classroom calendar and wanted to use the new timer for math challenges. Students worked in pairs to solve multiplication problems before the timer beeped. \r\n\r\nThe students are using the calendar to track important project deadlines and classroom goals. The stickers and stamps are used to celebrate progress and effort along the way. My room has never had a working clock and it was frustrating for myself and the students to constantly be searching for the time. Now, with just a glance, we can easily keep track of the passage of time. \r\n\r\nThe apple pencil and iPad protective case mean that I am able to be with my students in the classroom as we work through problems on the board. I use them almost every day!\r\n\r\nThe students are also able to see all of their upcoming class assignments and lessons easily on our classroom wall because of the jumbo calendars you funded. No surprises. No excuses. Students can make short term plans with ease!\r\n\r\nWe also use the magnetic paper file every day! Notes for the entire week are available for students to take at ease from their daily slot.
