For many of them, books are already a favorite part of the day—but these materials were different. The sheer size of the books, the colorful illustrations that could be seen from across the room, and the interactive storytelling props that came with them created a level of excitement I will never forget.\r\n\r\nThe very first story we shared together was *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*. We gathered in a big circle on the carpet, and the moment I held up the giant book, the children gasped and started scooting closer. \"It's so big!\" one student exclaimed, while another whispered, \"I can see the pictures from all the way back here!\" As we read, students eagerly counted the foods, pointed to the bold images, and even acted out the caterpillar's journey. The storytelling kit included sequencing cards and props, which gave my students a chance to retell the story themselves. Watching them confidently stand up in front of their friends and lead the story—some even taking turns as \"the reader\"—was one of those teacher moments I'll treasure forever.\r\n\r\nYour generosity made this possible. These kits have already transformed our shared reading time. For many of my students, especially those who need extra support with language, communication, and confidence, having visual, hands-on tools makes all the difference. One child who is usually hesitant to speak in front of the group proudly held a picture card and announced, \"The caterpillar is eating strawberries today!\" The room erupted in applause, and I could see the pride on their face. That small moment was a huge step in building confidence and self-expression.\r\n\r\nWe are now using the storytelling kits as part of our literacy centers. Each week, small groups rotate through the \"Big Book Station,\" where they practice retelling, sequencing, and even creating new endings to familiar stories. The size and clarity of the books allow all students to engage equally, while the props give them the chance to become storytellers themselves. It is amazing to watch children who once struggled to participate now leading their peers through the story with excitement and creativity.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in my students and helping to make storytelling a joyful, hands-on, confidence-building experience. Every smile, every raised hand, every \"Can I go next?\" is because of your generosity. You have given my students the gift of seeing themselves as readers, writers, and storytellers—and that is a gift that will last far beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1754329588596,"projectUrl":"project/big-book-storytelling-kit-for-confident/9449152/","projectTitle":"Big Book Storytelling Kit for Confident Kindergarten Stars!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Aburub","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6890242"},{"teacherId":6890242,"projectId":9326139,"letterContent":"When the toys arrived, my preschoolers couldn't wait to start playing. They opened the dollhouses and campers and began creating little \"families\" who went on pretend vacations. At the kitchen set, students worked together to cook meals, pour tea, and serve food to their friends. With the cars and rover, they built roads across the classroom rug and even made \"traffic rules,\" taking turns being the driver and the police officer.\r\n\r\nThese toys are not only fun but also helping my students learn. A child who usually plays alone joined others at the tea set and practiced asking, \"Would you like some tea?\" Another group used the dollhouse people to act out bedtime routines, practicing language around brushing teeth and reading stories. The vehicles sparked problem-solving as children figured out how to make the rover climb over blocks without tipping over.\r\n\r\nYour generosity gave my students the chance to imagine, cooperate, and talk with each other in new ways. Every day, they are learning important social and language skills while having fun. Thank you for making our classroom such a joyful place to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1747248578863,"projectUrl":"project/imagination-station/9326139/","projectTitle":"Imagination Station","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Aburub","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6890242"},{"teacherId":6890242,"projectId":9149028,"letterContent":"The new resources you helped bring into our classroom have already made a remarkable difference for my students. The second monitor has allowed me to display visuals during lessons so that every child can follow along, no matter their learning style. Just this week, we used it during our morning meeting to show picture prompts, and several of my students who usually hesitate were eager to participate because they could see and understand the visuals so clearly.\r\n\r\nWhen the magnetic tiles and obstacle course items arrived, the students' excitement was immediate. They ran to explore the new materials, and within minutes, I saw small groups working together to build towers, dinosaurs, and imaginative cities with the tiles. During outdoor play, students took turns crossing the stepping stones, cheering each other on as they balanced and problem-solved together. For children who sometimes struggle to connect with peers, these tools opened new opportunities for collaboration and joy.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include incorporating these materials into ongoing literacy and math lessons—for example, using magnetic tiles to build letters, shapes, and number patterns, and setting up obstacle challenges that connect to story themes. These resources will continue to provide hands-on, engaging ways to strengthen communication, motor skills, and confidence for all of my learners.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students and helping to create a classroom where every child can thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1746466810338,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-big-growth-in-little-learners/9149028/","projectTitle":"Supporting Big Growth in Little Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Aburub","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6890242"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_73850","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":750,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":2,"percentAsian":26,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":89.3,"schoolId":73850,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Colvin Run Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Colvin Run Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/fairfax-county-public-schools/colvin-run-elementary-school/73850"}
