Many of my students rely on the two meals they receive at school each day, and even then, it's often not enough to keep them full. There have been days when students have quietly cried in class because their stomachs hurt from hunger. Being able to offer snacks has truly been a blessing. It means they can grab something to eat whenever they need it, without having to ask and without any embarrassment. Our Monster Day was a HUGE success, and it's all thanks to your generous support!\r\n\r\nWe kicked off the day with the lights off and glow sticks to set the spooky-fun tone before reading I Need My Monster. The students were completely engaged and loved every moment. Throughout the day, they built their own monsters, described them in writing, and participated in a variety of learning activities inspired by the story.\r\n\r\nAfter each activity, students earned a small prize — and what a hit those were! The slap bracelets were especially popular, and the erasers were adorable. The students also loved using their new notebooks to draw and write all day long. The monster bookmarks were super cute (even if they took a little extra time to make!).\r\n\r\nIt was truly a wonderful day filled with creativity, learning, and joy. None of this would have been possible without your kindness and generosity. I got the idea to make an \"after testing box\" with new things for them to do. I was hoping it would build excitement and keep them motivated. I wanted to do lasting things that could be used year after year. During Christmas I had a Grinch puzzle and they were crazy for it. That was my inspiration for all of the puzzles.\r\nI didn't say anything to my students, just brought the tub in with the notes on it. I taped it shut so they couldn't sneak a peek. They began asking questions and were very curious. I kept telling them, \"Do well on your tests so you can open it.\" Well, it worked! Most of my students went up in reading and math. I am so proud of them. They were super excited about the new items and have used them every day since. My students were very excited to get some seeds and supplies to put into the Aerogardens. We planted basil. This ended up with us making pesto! The students were in charge of this every step of the way!\r\nThey planted the seeds and were in charge of adding the nutrients. They also had to watch the water levels. Once the plants were mature, each student got to pick a basil leaf to harvest. Our families sent in pita chips and everything necessary to make pesto. It was a great learning experience to have them measure out the ingredients. Many of them had never seen a food processor before. I was surprised how many of the students liked the pesto.
