In our middle school STEM class, students created biodegradable plastic and learned how atoms and molecules can be manipulated to form new materials while discussing how material design can help address plastic pollution. In 8th grade, students used the materials to perform an electrolysis investigation to break the bonds of water (H₂O) and produce oxygen, connecting chemical reactions to energy and engineering applications. In 7th grade, students used balsa wood to design and build scale model sheds as part of a design and modeling unit, using a scale of 1 inch equals 1 foot to construct a 12-inch by 12-inch structure.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited to have real tools and supplies to work with instead of only watching demonstrations or videos. One student shared, \"This grant helped us get supplies so we can be more active and learn while having fun.\" Another wrote, \"The grant was very important for more stuff to teach us in fun ways to learn.\" The ability to build, test, and observe real results has made learning more engaging and meaningful for students.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue using these materials as we expand our materials science and engineering units. They will build on their understanding of atoms, molecules, and material properties while designing and testing new models and experiments that connect science concepts to real-world engineering challenges. These resources will continue to support hands-on learning across multiple grade levels throughout the school year.","fullyFundedDate":1763054835759,"projectUrl":"project/material-science-lab/9461439/","projectTitle":"Material Science Lab","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10078578_orig.jpg?crop=448,448,x0,y13&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1770584741873","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10078578"},{"teacherId":7938308,"projectId":9497828,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping me fund this project!
