Many of the texts I've purchased feature narrators who come from different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds, and I know that my students will develop empathy and knowledge as they read about people different from them. \r\n\r\nIn my classroom, students start every language arts period with independent reading. They have freedom to choose what to read, and I move around the room and confer with them about their chosen texts. I keep notes on their preferences and try to make recommendations that suit their reading levels and interest areas. I also have students complete independent reading projects to show that they are reflecting on the messages of the texts they read.\r\n\r\nLast year's class of sixth graders didn't have too much time with our new books because the books were arriving as our school year was ending, but a few students got to look through the options and there was a good bit of excitement! I am eager to showacse these books with my new group of sixth graders!","fullyFundedDate":1746491062542,"projectUrl":"project/help-bring-diversity-and-representation/9235374/","projectTitle":"Help Bring Diversity and Representation to Our Classroom Library!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Whitman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1008850_orig.jpg?crop=728,728,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738765936972","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1008850"},{"teacherId":1008850,"projectId":9099625,"letterContent":"What a fantastic Indian food tasting we had today thanks to your generosity! I have a few students who I know to be on the pickier side, and it was especially satisfying to watch them leave their comfort zones and fill their plates with new items to try.\r\n\r\nThere are so many fun activities that I dream of realizing in my classroom, and cost is often the biggest deterrent.
