They got excited to research the animal habitats, defense mechanisms, food chain positions, and weaponry that each animal possesses. We did 2 animals per week, (I only see them once a week) and they could not wait to see which animals were next. I plan to do another unit with them in the spring using different animals. \r\n\r\nThese books are the ones most sought out by my students, especially my boys. Non-fiction is the book of choice for many boys. Even the boys who don't particularly like reading go for these books. We did a project in which students chose a national park to research. They were most interested in the redwood trees in California and the glaciers in Glacier Park. Although most of my students have never been to these places before, hopefully I have given them a \"travel bug\" so that they will want to see our beautiful country. There's a whole wide world out there, and I want my students to see it. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for pouring into my students. They always get so excited when we get new books. Students researched the city and learned all about how the people and animals tried to escape, but they weren't fast enough to get away. Mount Vesuvius had a devastating eruption, and the city was covered in ash, rock, and lava.\r\n\r\nThey enjoyed listening to the books read aloud and reading the other books independently. After our research, we built parts of the city from cardboard. One group built the coliseum, one group built houses, while others built restaurants. They really enjoyed having the books in hand. \r\n\r\nWhen we were done with the unit, I gave each student a copy of I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79. They were thrilled to have a personal copy of the book to keep at home.
