They couldn't wait to see which substances would \"light up\" and conduct electricity. We began by testing everyday materials such as saltwater, sugar solutions, and even sports drinks to see which allowed the testers to glow. Their faces lit up with curiosity and amazement as they made real-world connections between ions, solutions, and conductivity.\r\n\r\nThese new tools have transformed how my students engage with chemistry. Instead of simply reading about conductivity, they now get to explore it firsthand through experimentation and data collection. During one memorable lab, a group of students debated why distilled water didn't cause the tester to light up while saltwater did. The lively discussion that followed showed just how much ownership they were taking in their learning and understanding.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will build on this knowledge by designing their own conductivity investigations, testing unknown solutions, and applying their results to explain chemical behavior. It was incredible to watch their confidence grow as they realized they finally had the tools they needed to work independently and accurately.\r\n\r\nWe've already been using the calculators in several ways: balancing complex chemical equations, calculating molar masses, and analyzing data from our recent reaction rate lab. One memorable moment was during our titration experiment, when students used the calculators to determine the concentration of an unknown acid. Their pride in getting precise, reliable results was unmistakable; they were thrilled to see how real scientists use math to understand chemical reactions.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will be applying their calculator skills to our upcoming unit on gas laws, where they'll explore the relationships between pressure, temperature, and volume. As I mentioned in my proposal, teachers like myself are trying to diversify the selection of books students read, both for school credit and for fun. For many years I've kept a library in my classroom of my own books that students could borrow, but I wanted to add a lot more, newer titles to my collection. Your generous donation has helped me do just that. \r\nIn case you haven't been on a high school campus in a while, students spend a lot of downtime in classrooms - before and after school, during break and lunch, after they've finished their work - and my main goal for this project is to steer students to my class library to peruse books during this downtime. Students no longer have access to their smartphones during the school day, so I knew there would be an opportunity to fill their spare time with books! \r\nAlready, students are gravitating toward my class library and checking out the new (and old) titles. My hope is that this will introduce students to exciting stories they weren't familiar with and spark or rekindle an interest in reading.\r\nThanks again for your generosity!","fullyFundedDate":1758499775289,"projectUrl":"project/book-diversity/9692616/","projectTitle":"Book Diversity","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Swett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10245855"},{"teacherId":4658946,"projectId":9758697,"letterContent":"Thanks to your incredible generosity, our classroom has been energized by the addition of our new iPad, Apple Pencil, and case!
