This project was created to help educate our school community about Autism and how it impacts the a child's ability to express him or herself. In conjunction with teacher appreciation week, the students in the speech therapy groups were able to speak in the classrooms and explain the different alternative methods that individuals with Autism and other communication disorders may use if one cannot speak. When the donated resources began to arrive, the students were very excited. Of course they wanted to be able to eat the snacks. However, it was explained to them that they had to participate first in teaching others about communication difficulties and then they would earn a snack off the cafe cart. \r\n\r\nThe kids created menus and choice boards of the different snacks as well as helped to stock and organize the cart to replenish the items when inventory was low. We traveled to the classrooms during their therapy time. Teachers were asked if we could demonstrate and explain what it is to have to use an alternate means of communication. Since this was therapy time as well, students had the opportunity to practice the skills they had learned such as producing sounds accurately, asking and answering questions, using descriptive vocabulary, using stuttering strategies to be more fluent, making good eye contact, and forming grammatically correct sentences. Our students took turns demonstrating how to use a program called Touch Chat which is an app used on a tablet. It has picture icons that help to form sentences so that if a person is non-verbal they can touch a single picture to speak a message depending on their developmental level of language. Additionally, we had paper based core boards with the same pictures. It was explained that if the technology fails such as from a battery not being charged, one can still point to pictures on the paper. \r\n\r\nThis is the second time that we have done this project and everyone at our school was happy to participate. We are going to continue to build upon this by creating other programs throughout the next school year that continue to educate our school community about Autism, how it impacts an individual's communication abilities and the myriad of technological devices that are available to facilitate expressive language. I talked with the students about being kind and how kind people donated to our project. I know they don't quite get the gesture behind it, but were very excited opening the boxes with us. They were smiling and saying \"thank you\" for the Christmas gift-lol.. My classroom has students with special abilities(needs) that range from age 3-5 years old, and deserves a nice organized classroom such as ours now. The materials have been placed in various tables throughout our Media Center and are providing different ways for my students to self-soothe, manage anxiety, and stay engaged in learning. For example, the Calming Sensory Bottles are creating a visual and soothing experience, helping many of my students to regulate their emotions when feeling overwhelmed. The Fidget Toys are helping with concentration and students are able to release excess energy, which is especially beneficial for our students with ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing challenges. And the Calming Sensory Kits are assisting by giving my students options to find what works best for them in moments of stress or sensory overload.\r\nBecause of you , my students have the continued opportuity to find healthy coping mechanisms, improving their ability to focus, and promoting a positive learning environment in our Media Center.","fullyFundedDate":1737129675287,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-support/9003707/","projectTitle":"Sensory Support","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Concepcion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9872524"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45365","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":578,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":57,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":50.3,"schoolId":45365,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Colbert Museum Magnet on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Colbert Museum Magnet","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/broward-county-public-schools/colbert-elementary-school/45365"}
