Because there are 63 national parks, each student was assigned a different park to research, which made the project feel personal, unique, and exciting. Using the newly donated books along with Chromebooks and the Internet, students completed graphic organizers that provided an overview of their park's location, history, wildlife, and major landmarks. Many were so absorbed in their research that they didn't want to stop when it was time to leave for the next class. The topic felt refreshingly different from their usual academic content, which helped spark genuine curiosity and motivation.\r\n\r\nThrough this project and lesson, students developed valuable research and literacy skills. Fourth graders, who were newer to research, learned how to identify reliable sources, navigate nonfiction text features, and organize their findings with extra support. Sixth graders demonstrated strong independence and thoroughly enjoyed digging into the topic. All students practiced note-taking, summarizing information, and using technology responsibly to complete academic tasks. We also held a class discussion about the origins of the National Park System with former President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir. Students shared personal experiences from parks they had visited—especially the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our closest park here in Alabama. This project not only built research and technology skills but also helped students develop pride, connection, and appreciation for America's natural wonders.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, students were provided with blank thank you postcards and instructed to write notes to the donors for their kindness. They were taught the importance of always expressing gratitude when someone does a good deed for them. For many, this was their first time writing a thank you note, so it was a new and meaningful experience. Students were given an example to guide their writing, and for privacy purposes, they were reminded to only include their first name on the card. This activity not only reinforced gratitude and kindness but also helped students practice written communication and proper etiquette. After the research project concluded, the donated National Park books—as well as other picture books on the topic—were made available for student checkout, allowing their learning and curiosity to continue beyond the lesson.","fullyFundedDate":1755154135630,"projectUrl":"project/passport-to-the-parks-researching-ameri/9317247/","projectTitle":"Passport to the Parks: Researching America’s Natural Treasures","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dobbs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6314234_orig.jpg?crop=481,481,x0,y1&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746332912819","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6314234"},{"teacherId":6314234,"projectId":9316738,"letterContent":"Our school is so grateful for your incredibly generous donation of manga books to our school library! These new additions have created an immediate buzz among our students, drawing both our avid readers and those who are sometimes more reluctant to pick up a book. Manga is such a powerful format because it blends engaging visuals with meaningful storytelling, which helps students strengthen comprehension, sequencing, and inferencing skills. For many, these books are opening doors to new genres, themes, and perspectives they hadn't explored before.\r\n\r\nReading in our library now feels more vibrant and inclusive than ever. Students can be found gathered around the manga shelves, discussing plot twists, sharing favorite characters, and recommending series to one another. These books are not only building literacy skills but also fostering community, excitement, and a true love of reading. We have noticed several students who previously struggled to finish traditional chapter books now eagerly reading volume after volume of manga with confidence and joy. One student in particular, who once described reading as \"boring,\" now races to the library to check if the next installment is available.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made a lasting difference for our school. By supporting this project, you've given students access to books that meet them where they are and encourage them to grow as readers in ways that are both fun and meaningful. Thank you for investing in their learning, their confidence, and their joy.","fullyFundedDate":1749242448957,"projectUrl":"project/manga-madness-expanding-minds-through-l/9316738/","projectTitle":"Manga Madness!
