Our students have been enjoying the upgraded yoga room since they finished the work, and feel much more at ease and comfortable in the space! As a young Nigerian girl whose main exposure to reading began with books featuring mainly the faces and stories of white people, Adichie, like many young people of color, was not represented in the literature she was exposed to at an early age. \r\n\r\nHowever, thanks to your financial contributions to purchase books that reflect their identities, the young teens at City High School will have ready access to that many more books which complicate the \"single stories\" of whiteness, ableism, sexism, heteronormativity, and gender conformity represented too often by a limited selection of reading material available to them. Thanks to you, their reading selections will be that much richer with stories of young black girls facing the challenges of growing up strong in the face of stereotypes, of perspectives and resilience of fellow autistic people, of love stories between young men, of indigenous cosmologies in languages other than English. You have rescued our students from the dangers of a single story, and for that, we thank you! \r\n\r\nAs well, your contributions to City High's growing collection of titles supplied important work for a special group of students \"hired\" as Literacy Ambassadors. The small group of Ambassadors from multiple grade levels worked to shelve books and maintain the library space on campus, logging their own hours and documenting their consistent service as volunteers over several months. They also received ongoing training on how to process incoming books for inclusion in the library database called Libib that we used at our school. It was a joy for these students to be able to work with the new texts that we purchased for the library with your donations, learning how to barcode, tape up spine labels, and shelve them for the first time to be checked out by peers. Working as a team gave them an immense sense of pride. Your financial contributions provided a key foundation to the development of the Literacy Ambassador program because working with the books we received through Donor's Choose allowed them to put their volunteer service into action, and make a difference as leaders at our small school. \r\n\r\nIn closing, let it be known with clear and joyful thanks that we at City High deeply appreciate your support of our young readers and service learners. You make a difference. Such a short and oft-repeated phrase might sound like a cliche, but all cliches attempt to remind us of foundational truths that shouldn't be forgotten despite their simplicity. You matter. In wordier terms: your commitment to care for the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and sociological well being of young people whose voices, stories, and experiences are growing more easily and callously marginalized by the day, the hour, the minute; to care by validating their ways of being and knowing through books that hold up a mirror of themselves and offer alternatives; to care by casting seeds of hope upon their inner fields of self-regard - that is everything. That care will grow people who, because they see themselves belonging in the pages of books, may, in turn, see themselves as belonging in the wider community. \r\n\r\nOr, to demand it. May it be so!","fullyFundedDate":1715347285694,"projectUrl":"project/enliven-our-school-library-with-diverse/8319994/","projectTitle":"Enliven Our School Library with Diverse, Inclusive YA Titles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9515021_orig.jpg?crop=1944,1944,x0,y447&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1713469137657","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9515021"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_31801","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":176,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":44,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":80.1,"schoolId":31801,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about City High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"City High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/arizona-department-of-education/city-high-school/31801"}
