We began our journey by reading books all about chickens, their life cycle, and how they grow. The children were immediately captivated—drawn to the vibrant images, engaging stories, and hands-on toys and manipulatives, including a life cycle kit that helped make abstract ideas feel real. The books were read so many times and loved so deeply that some had to be retired by the end of the unit! Once we had a solid understanding, we took the exciting step of getting fertilized eggs and placing them in an incubator. For three weeks, we carefully monitored temperature, humidity, and turned the eggs, building anticipation each day.\r\n\r\nWhen the eggs finally began to crack, the classroom was filled with squeals of joy, pointing fingers, and attempts to communicate the excitement to nearby adults. The children were absolutely smitten the moment the chicks hatched! They learned to be gentle, to use new vocabulary like \"soft,\" \"gentle\" \"incubator,\" \"hatch,\" and \"chick,\" and they practiced responsibility by helping feed the chicks, refilling their water, and cleaning their enclosure. This experience didn't just teach science—it encouraged rich language, social interaction, and care for living things.\r\n\r\nEven though the chicks have grown and the unit has ended, the memories live on. Parents still email asking for pictures so their children can revisit that special time. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for giving our students such a magical and meaningful science experience. Your support brought life and joy into our classroom in a way that will be remembered for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1652817591280,"projectUrl":"project/cracking-into-science-one-peep-at-a-tim/6292116/","projectTitle":"Cracking into Science, One Peep at a Time!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kalyn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7233446_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y548&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1589420096866","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7233446"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_104803","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":78,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":104803,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Children's Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Children's Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/mountain-view-school-district-los-angeles/children-s-center/104803"}
