The new materials have helped create opportunities for students to interact with their peers, make choices, problem-solve, and use language spontaneously rather than simply completing worksheets or answering questions. Students who may be hesitant to communicate during structured activities are often more willing to engage when they can explore, play, and interact with materials that capture their interests. Due to this, students' intrinsic motivation to read books was naturally lower and students needed significant support navigating the classroom library to find a text that would interest them and contain some sort of representation. Students loved to read, but wanted to visualize themselves in the texts. \r\n\r\nWhen students received the gracious classroom library donation, they were ecstatic! Students began to see themselves within the texts and gained a new love for reading. During time for independent choices, students began to read their library books rather than the other options. Students also were observed sharing key takeaways from their books to a neighbor or a friend and recommending that their friend read it as well once their finished their text. Students regained their motivation and love for reading - especially developing their reading stamina with the chapter books.
