It is set up as a free choice during center time. All the children enjoy playing with it so we have to take turns. (taking turns is a skill all the children are working on) The children were so excited when they saw the dollhouse. They thought once I opened the box they would be able to play. They were so sad when they saw it had to be put together.\r\n\r\nA dollhouse may seem like simple pretend play, but it is actually a valuable teaching tool that supports many areas of development. It impacts social and emotional development, language and communication, cognitive and problem-solving skills, fine motor and spatial development. The children are using more language with each other, they're improving their fine motor skills by moving the small people and furniture. I'm also seeing more cooperative play when playing with the dollhouse and in other areas of the classroom. That makes my teacher heart happy. Thanks so much for your generosity! They have learned about different weeds, various forms of life that live in the soil and how they help keep it nutrient rich. We asked for this book storage bench because we thought it would allow more children in the center, organize more books, and make a nice place to read together. It did all that plus a lot more. The children who always read books were ecstatic that there were more books available to read. I knew those children would be happy. What I didn't expect is that children who never go to the book center would visit the center on a daily basis. Children are sharing and talking about their books. We placed the bench by a big window that lets in sunlight and the children are so happy while reading. The children enter the classroom, look into the mirror, and then recite the affirmation. We focus on one affirmation per week. They use the affirmations throughout the day as they see fit. We will also remind them to use their affirmations in difficult situations. I have a child who has a diagnosis of ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. He is using affirmations as a way to manage his behavior. He often gets frustrated while doing his work. In the past, he would become very angry and tear up his work. Now, when he recognizes that he is frustrated he will say an affirmation. His favorite affirmation is, \"I can do hard things. It is amazing to me how the simple act of speaking positive statements to yourself truly builds confidence. This child has been an example to the other children. They are following his lead and saying affirmations. I notice the environment feels calmer and the children are more confident and cooperative with each other.","fullyFundedDate":1739373774972,"projectUrl":"project/learning-to-be-confident-and-love-oursel/9094964/","projectTitle":"Learning To Be Confident and Love Ourselves!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kim Phillips","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2821532_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1496722192203","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kaphillips"},{"teacherId":2821532,"projectId":9056969,"letterContent":"This calming space may be the best and most useful gift my classroom has ever received. Not only were the children excited when they saw the space but our classroom neighbors were in awe of how calming and beautiful our space looked. The children learned very quickly how to use the space in an appropriate manner. I anticipated that we would have some children who would need guidance on how to use the space. I was pleasantly surprised when each child used the space in an acceptable way. It is open when the children need a break or just want to relax. Some go in there and sit, read, or listen to music. Some of the children go in and just sit. I'm going to be completely honest, one day, on my lunch break, I went in and relaxed! It was amazing! Thanks so much! Thanks to your donations, we had plenty of paint to decorate pumpkins during our behavioral incentive party for October 2024. \r\n\r\nThose students, who earned the party, enjoyed their time. Some pumpkin were very creative and cute. However, its biggest impact was with those students who did not earn the party. I know, it sounds cruel, but please hear me out. My colleagues and I have often been stumped when we're asked to reward kids for good behavior, yet no budget, supplies, or ideas beyond extra recess or a coupon to a local restaurant has been given. After a kickball game here, or a walk to a local ice cream shop for a small cone, the rewards, well, just weren't incentivizing. We teachers were still stuck with those two to three students per class who were \"above the simple fun\". Our discipline statistics weren't curved, and we teachers felt like we were throwing parties for parties' sakes. That was until your paints and my pumpkins showed up. Boy did that change a sizeable group of students' attitudes!\r\n\r\nThe activity was different; these non-participating students definitely felt the impact of their behaviors. Now, we teachers are not completely heartless. The activity then led to desired behavioral changes during the months of November and December in which we were able to use leftover paint from your generous donations for a kid-friendly paint-and-sip (hot chocolate) party. Many more students were able to participate in this activity thanks to you all. Extra awesome is there is still plenty of paint for me to plan possible Valentine or end-of-year activities or crafts.","fullyFundedDate":1727455657109,"projectUrl":"project/pumpkin-paint/8818938/","projectTitle":"Pumpkin Paint","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vadgamwala","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9777113_orig.jpg?crop=1345,1345,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727209786504","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9777113"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_84283","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":571,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":60,"percentWhite":24,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"26.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.4,"schoolId":84283,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Cheviot Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Cheviot Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/cincinnati-public-schools/cheviot-elementary-school/84283"}
