I knew right away that I wanted to create a space where learning felt exciting, hands-on, and meaningful—especially in math and science. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible donors, that vision has come to life. The materials funded through our DonorsChoose project—math games, science kits, STEM manipulatives, organizational tools, and sensory supports—have completely transformed the way my students experience school.\r\n\r\nBefore these items arrived, most of our lessons were dependent on paper-and-pencil activities and lecture-based instruction. Now, my students are immersed in learning that is active, engaging, and student-centered. With the Lakeshore Hands-On Science Kits and the Snap Circuits Exploration Set, students no longer just read about scientific concepts—they explore them. They've built models, conducted experiments, and discovered firsthand how electricity works, how landforms change, and how forces affect motion. Science has become one of the most anticipated parts of our week, and it's not just because it's \"fun.\" My students are developing critical thinking, observation, and inquiry skills that will serve them well beyond this classroom.\r\n\r\nIn math, tools like fraction dice, magnetic tiles, and practice card games have made abstract concepts more concrete. Students who once struggled with fractions are now confidently comparing and simplifying them using hands-on materials. The \"I Have, Who Has?\" games and Brain Quest cards have turned review time into friendly competition, and small group rotations are running more smoothly than ever with the help of new organization trays and visual supports.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, one of the most meaningful additions to our classroom has been the calming and sensory tools. Items like fidget toys, chair bands, and sensory mats have provided the regulation supports that many of my students need in order to stay focused and feel safe in the learning environment. One student who often needed breaks to manage anxiety now uses the calming corner independently and returns to class activities with renewed focus and confidence. These tools have helped normalize self-awareness and emotional regulation as part of our classroom culture.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these resources has gone far beyond what I imagined. I've seen students who were hesitant or disengaged light up with curiosity. I've seen collaboration blossom during group activities, with students offering ideas and solving problems together. I've watched learners who needed a different kind of support—whether academic, organizational, or emotional—begin to flourish because the tools were finally available to meet them where they are.\r\n\r\nThis project has not just brought materials into my classroom—it has brought opportunity, equity, and excitement. It has helped me create a learning environment that supports the whole child, where each student feels valued, challenged, and capable. For that, I am deeply grateful. To everyone who contributed: thank you for believing in us. You've made a lasting difference in the lives of my students—and in my journey as their teacher.","fullyFundedDate":1740008407389,"projectUrl":"project/stem-stations-small-groups-sel-build/9109581/","projectTitle":"STEM Stations, Small Groups & SEL: Building a Thriving Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. K. Now that the project is fully funded and the seating options are in place, I can say without hesitation that it has made a tremendous impact on both the learning environment and the emotional well-being of my students.\r\n\r\nFrom the very first day we introduced the new seating choices—wobble stools, cushions, floor seats, and a small calming area—the energy in the room shifted. Students who used to struggle with focus in traditional chairs found that they could better concentrate when given the option to move a bit, choose a different posture, or just sit in a way that made their body feel more at ease. The wobble stools, in particular, have become a favorite for students who tend to fidget or have trouble staying still during lessons. Instead of becoming a distraction, that energy is now being channeled into learning.\r\n\r\nThe calming area has also been a game changer. For students who experience stress, frustration, or sensory overload during the day, this space has become a refuge. Equipped with soft seating and calming tools, it allows students to self-regulate and return to learning when they're ready—without the shame or stigma of being \"in trouble.\" I've noticed that just having the option of a break space gives students a greater sense of security and ownership over their emotions. Behavior issues related to frustration or anxiety have decreased, and students are more likely to advocate for themselves when they feel they need a moment to reset.\r\n\r\nAcademically, I've seen improvement in focus and stamina during both independent and group work. Students are more willing to stay engaged in tasks when they have some choice in where and how they work. For example, some students prefer lying on the floor with a clipboard, while others gather on cushions in a small group to work collaboratively. The room feels more like a shared space for learning rather than a rigid environment where everyone must sit the same way and stay in one place.\r\n\r\nThere has also been a noticeable shift in classroom culture. Students are learning to take responsibility for their choices by selecting seats that help them do their best work. We've had important conversations about what it means to respect shared spaces, to be aware of how our choices affect others, and to reflect on what helps us learn best. These are not just academic lessons—they're life skills that will follow them beyond this year.\r\n\r\nIn short, the flexible seating project has not only improved the physical space of my classroom but also enhanced student motivation, emotional well-being, and the overall learning experience. I am deeply grateful to the donors who made this possible. Your support has transformed our classroom into a space where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to learn in the ways that work best for them.","fullyFundedDate":1740355736361,"projectUrl":"project/seats-for-success-creating-a-flexible-l/9115944/","projectTitle":"Seats for Success: Creating a Flexible Learning Space!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. K. Since I work in a primarily STEM school, it is always a pleasure to add an \"A\" and show students how to hand-make things that have been automated. What I loved the most was seeing my student's interest become piqued. In this day and age, it is harder to consistently come up with projects that hold attention spans for more than one class period. metal embossing caught their eye the moment they laid eyes on the materials. They were asking about the different types of metals and their hardness, and were shocked at the end to see what Sharpie, paper towels, and a little rubbing alcohol could do to enhance their designs.\r\n\r\nI also enjoyed watching their artistic confidence grow. Many times, it is said that anyone can draw with enough practice and time, but many of my students like to see immediate results. With metal embossing, I made it more about the design than their drawing skills, an aspect of art making I know a lot of my students are better at.\r\n\r\nFor the 5th graders, this was an expansion of their 1st quarter linear design unit to hone in on specifically pattern and repetition.
