The teacher, who had very few resources, was thrilled to have so many engaging toys and learning items. I have been able to incorporate the items in speech therapy in many different ways.\r\n\r\nOur students are unique, so their use of the materials is also unique! One student LOVES the collection of animal figures. Every morning he plays with them (and some little blocks). I often prompt language by having him name the animals and choose between two. This is often after we sweep them out from under two chairs where another friend joyfully dumps all of the toys he can find.\r\n\r\nOur friend who is most ready to transition to a general education classroom is able to match all of the letters on the alphabet racetrack toy. He will often choose the blocks as a \"break\" activity and use them to build a house or Burger King! He especially benefits from having a range of items to interact with.\r\n\r\nOne of our more challenging friends likes to sit at the table and play with slime. I will often sit by him with playdough and our new playdough tools and model language. He will sometimes use the playdough tools with his slime.\r\n\r\nMy favorite moment with our new materials happened with the wind-up toys. I was sitting in a corner showing them to one student and our challenging buddy voluntarily came to join us! He played with us for a few minutes while I modeled using language to ask for help with winding up the toys. I have loved seeing him show an interest in different things.\r\n\r\nAs you can see, our students don't always interact with toys in the same way as we might expect, but they still love having a variety of things to play with. I appreciate new opportunities to encourage language.
